OHSAA receives legal support in lawsuit

COLUMBUS

The Ohio High School Athletic Association announced Friday that Cincinnati-based law firm Keating, Muething and Klekamp PLL (KMK) will assist the OHSAA in defense of the lawsuit filed Wednesday in Hamilton County by Roger Bacon High School and the Greater Catholic League Coed.

KMK will join OHSAA general counsel Steve Craig, Esq., in defense of the process that OHSAA member schools voted into place in 2014 that determines how schools are assigned to postseason divisions in football, soccer, volleyball, basketball, softball and baseball.

On Wednesday, the OHSAA was informed that the Court of Common Pleas in Hamilton County granted a temporary restraining order (TRO) that prohibits the OHSAA from utilizing a component of the Competitive Balance process against St. Bernard Roger Bacon High School and the other seven members of the GCL coed division.

The ruling has no effect on regular season schedules.

Scrappers blown out by Spikes, lose six straight

The Mahoning Valley Scrappers lost their sixth straight game after a 9-3 loss to the State College Spikes on Friday at Eastwood Field.

The Scrappers’ only runs on Tyler Freeman’s RBI single in the first, his RBI double in the eighth and Connor Smith scored on a wild pitch.

Juan Mota allowed five runs on four hits and two walks. He struck out five in five innings for the Scrappers.

Franyel Casadilla allowed one run on three hits and a walk in seven innings for the Spikes.

The Scrappers and the Spikes will play again today. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

Snedeker follows 59 with 67, at Wyndham

GREENSBORO, N.C.

Brandt Snedeker followed his opening 11-under 59 with a 67 on Friday to take a two-stroke lead into the weekend at the Wyndham Championship.

A day after becoming the 10th player in PGA Tour history to break 60, Snedeker moved to 14-under 126 halfway through the final PGA Tour event before the playoffs.

D.A. Points shot a 64 to reach 12 under — one stroke ahead of C.T. Pan, who also had a 64. David Hearn, Peter Malnati, Keith Mitchell, Harris English, Brett Stegmaier and Sergio Garcia were 9 under.

Kokrak shoots 2-under, makes Wyndham cut

GREENSBORO, N.C.

Jason Kokrak shot a 2-under 68 in the second round of the Wyndham Championship on Friday.

The Warren JFK graduate is tied for 52nd with 20 others. His round included five birdies and three bogeys.

Kokrak’s third round tee time is scheduled for today at 8:48 a.m. His playing partner is Rafa Cabrera Bello.

Golf Channel coverage begins at 1 p.m. today. CBS coverage begins at 3 p.m.

Kyle Larson takes third pole at Bristol

BRISTOL, Tenn.

Kyle Larson won his third pole of the season as he eyes his first NASCAR Cup Series victory of the year.

Larson turned a lap at 127.792 mph Friday in qualifying at Bristol Motor Speedway. Chase Elliott was second at 127.665.

Kyle Busch was third on a track that he’s mastered throughout his career. Busch will be seeking his eighth Cup victory at Bristol in tonight’s race.

Larson’s chances of winning could depend on whether he can hold off Busch, who already has seven Cup victories at Bristol.

Busch has won six Cup races this year and holds a narrow lead over Kevin Harvick and Martin Truex Jr. in the season standings.

Harvick qualified sixth.

Truex didn’t make it out of the second round of qualifying and will start 17th out of 40 cars today.

The threat of inclement weather has caused the starting time for today’s race to move up to 6:45 p.m.
