The Poland library was the location of the Shimmy, Shake and Make event on July 23.

Librarian Amanda Kollar, who led the event, said that the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County usually hosts a craft event each year as part of its Summer Reading Program and relating to each year’s theme. This year’s theme is “Libraries Rock!” so the crafts has a musical angle to them.

Kollar said she enjoys hosting these types of events because she likes getting to see the participants have fun, use their imaginations and try some new things.

Groups of children with parents in tow progressed from one station to the next, completing a craft at each, including straw art, rhythm ribbons, coloring musical notes, making a teddy bear ear bud holder and more.

Luci and Katie DePalma, who attended the Shimmy, Shake and Make event, said that they hadn’t had many chances to attend events at the library yet, but that they planned to attend an event or two per week in the future if they can. They said they enjoyed the craft aspect of the theme.

Upcoming events at the various branches of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County can be found online at www.libraryvisit.org.
