BOARDMAN

Staff report

The officers and council of the Boardman High School Alumni Association recently announced the selections for the ninth annual Boardman High School Distinguished Alumni award. The inductees were presented the award at the Seniors Honors Assembly in front of students, faculty and parents. The purpose of the award is to recognize outstanding alumni of Boardman High School who have maintained a high standard of excellence and made a significant contribution in their fields. These individuals must exemplify the ideals and spirit of BHS and should serve as role models for current and future students. The 2018 inductees were Michael Allshouse, class of 1980; Richard Grimm, class of 1976; and Richard Selby, class of 1949.

Allshouse is a highly decorated retired colonel with a 30-year career in the United States Air Force as a military and security expert. He was commander of the NATO unit in Afghanistan with 11 contributing coalition countries, managing some 350 aircraft and 26,000 personnel. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, the Non-Article 5 NATO Medal and the Afghanistan Campaign Medal. After retiring from active duty, Allshouse now works for the federal government as a civilian working for Air Force Command. He also is a decorated civilian volunteer. He has received the key to the city of Bellvue, Neb., for leading the effort to combat the flood of Missouri River and the highest honor in Guam, the Ancient Order of the Chamorri, for outstanding service provided.

He has held leadership roles in national and international clinical trials and has published more than 100 manuscripts. In addition, Grimm has been honored with the Distinguished Teacher Award and Innovator Award by the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic. He has been named to the “Best Doctors in America” for the past 10 years. Grimm is a researcher, lecturer and teacher.

After beginning his teaching career in junior high and high school, Selby became a guidance counselor. He later became BHS principal from 1970-85 and then superintendent from 1985 to 1996, where he ushered in the era of levy success and community support. Selby has held several positions in local and regional education organizations and has been the recipient of many awards. Prior to becoming an educator, he was an officer in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
