DETROIT

Nicholas Castellanos had a career-high five hits, including a go-ahead homer in the seventh inning, and drove in five runs as the Detroit Tigers beat the Chicago White Sox. Castellanos hit an RBI double in the fifth and hit a two-run home run off Jeanmar Gomez (0-1) in the seventh. Castellanos came up again in the eighth with the bases loaded and two outs, needing a triple for the cycle, but settled for a two-run single. Louis Coleman (4-1) got the win with a scoreless inning of relief. Detroit starter Artie Lewicki allowed three runs on six hits and three walks in 42/3 innings, while Chicago’s Reynaldo Lopez gave up four runs on seven hits and a walk in five innings.

Royals 3, Blue Jays 1

KANSAS CITY, MO.

Ryan O’Hearn homered and drove in a career-high three runs, Brad Keller threw seven strong innings and the Kansas City Royals beat the Toronto Blue Jays to spoil Sean Reid-Foley’s major league debut. Reid-Foley (0-1) was removed after 97 pitches and five innings, allowing three runs, six hits and three walks while striking out three. O’Hearn, a rookie who entered hitting .130 with three RBIs, hit an opposite-field homer on Reid-Foley’s first pitch with Brett Phillips aboard with two outs in the second. Brad Keller (5-5) yielded one run and four hits to pick up his third victory in his past four decisions. Wily Peralta earned his seventh save. Devon Travis homered in the first for Toronto.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Braves 9, Marlins 1 Braves 6, Marlins 1

ATLANTA

Ronald Acuna Jr. pulled off one of the rarest feats in baseball history, hitting leadoff homers in both games of a doubleheader to lead the first-place Atlanta Braves to a sweep of the Miami Marlins. Haitian-American Touki Toussaint pitched six strong innings to claim the win in his major league debut. Acuna became the fourth player in baseball history to hit a pair of leadoff homers in a doubleheader. Foltynewicz (10-7) went eight innings, allowing five hits and the lone Miami run. Freddie Freeman also went deep for the Braves in Game 2, his 19th homer of the season. Toussaint surrendered just two hits and only serious allowed a run.

INTERLEAGUE

Mets 8, Yankees 5

NEW YORK

Jacob deGrom struck out 12 and the New York Mets backed him in a big way, hitting five home runs while battering Luis Severino and the New York Yankees. Amed Rosario led off the Subway Series matchup with a drive into the right-field seats and Jose Bautista, Todd Frazier, Brandon Nimmo and Michael Conforto later connected. DeGrom (7-7) threw 62/3 innings and allowed two earned runs. Severino (15-6) was tagged for seven hits and four runs in four innings. Miguel Andujar hit a two-run homer in the Yankees eighth off Seth Lugo. Robert Gsellman worked the ninth for his seventh save.

Rangers 5, Diamondbacks 3

ARLINGTON, TEXAS

Bartolo Colon won his first start since setting the record for victories by a Latin American pitcher, going five innings to help the Texas Rangers beat the Arizona Diamondbacks. Robinson Chirinos hit a go-ahead, three-run homer in the fourth inning. Chirinos added an RBI single in the eighth. A.J. Pollock and Steven Souza Jr. each hit RBI doubles in the first. Colon allowed four hits and three runs. Jose Leclerc struck out two in a perfect ninth for his second save. Zack Greinke allowed six hits and four runs in 61/3 innings with two walks and six strikeouts.

Cardinals 7, Nationals 6

ST. LOUIS

Paul DeJong handed the Washington Nationals a second straight walk-off loss, capping a back-and-forth finish with a game-ending solo homer in the ninth inning of the St. Louis Cardinals’ victory. DeJong took Koda Glover (0-1) deep leading off the ninth on a 3-1 pitch. Matt Carpenter hit a three-run go-ahead homer during a four-run eighth inning for St. Louis. It was Carpenter’s 17th homer during a 31-game on-base streak. Washington tied it at 6 in the top of the ninth on RBI singles by Daniel Murphy and Matt Wieters off closer Bud Norris. Dakota Hudson (3-0) relieved Norris and stranded two baserunners by retiring Wilmer Difo and Adam Eaton. Jedd Gyorko also homered in the eighth inning for St. Louis. Juan Soto and Bryce Harper homered for Washington, which has lost five of seven.
