Walsh Jennings to chase gold, retire
ALAMEDA, Calif.
Kerri Walsh Jennings will retire from competitive beach volleyball after the Tokyo Olympics in two years.
Walsh Jennings made it clear Thursday in a sit-down with The Associated Press she will call it a career after the 2020 Games.
And the three-time Olympic gold medalist absolutely plans to go out with another gold around her neck after she and partner April Ross wound up with bronze at Rio in 2016, a heartbreaking disappointment that still stings for Walsh Jennings yet fuels her at the same time.
It may sound like a daunting task ahead: Walsh Jennings will turn 42 during the next Olympics. She has yet to settle on a partner though she has narrowed down her choice to two women. She is also coming off a pair of surgeries last year on her right shoulder and left ankle.
Comcast drops Spain' La Liga
NEW YORK
BeIN Sports, which has televised Spain's La Liga in the U.S. since the 2012-13 season, has been dropped by the cable systems of Comcast Xfinity and Verizon Fios.
BeIN said filed a complaint against Comcast four months ago with the Federal Communications Commission, accusing violations of program carriage rules and the non-discrimination condition that was part of the FCC approval of Comcast's purchase of NBC Universal.
BeIN said Tuesday that Verizon sought to shift it to a more expensive tier, and Verizon said BeIN sought a fees increase.
Comcast said BeIN would not guarantee what programming it will have going forward. BeIN has carried Italy's Serie A since 2012-13 but that deal expired and a new U.S. rights holder has not been announced.
NBC has U.S. television rights to England's Premier League and Fox has rights to the German Bundesliga. Turner takes over rights to the Champions League this season from Fox, which had televised Europe's top club competition since 2009-10.
Swiss hooligans injure Greek soccer fans
BASEL, Switzerland
Swiss police say five fans of Greek club PAOK Thessaloniki were hurt in an attack by local hooligans at a hotel in Basel.
The incident on Wednesday came hours before Thessaloniki beat FC Basel 3-0 in a Champions League qualifying match, eliminating the Swiss team 5-1 on aggregate.
City police said on Thursday about 20 men, some of them with Basel flags, used unspecified objects to attack about 50 fans of the Greek team who were in and outside a hotel lobby. Four men and a 15-year-old girl were hurt, and one of them had to be taken to a hospital.
The assailants fled the scene.
Police appealed to the public to come forward with any photos or video recordings.
