Dickerson, Nasonti power offense, but YSU comes up short

Drew Dickerson had a pair of singles to lead the Penguins offensively, but it wasn’t enough as the YSU lost to Wright State, 8-3, at Eastwood Field.

Lucas Nasonti drove in a pair of runs.

The Raiders took a 5-0 lead in the top of the third inning with an RBI triple by Matt Morrow, a two-run single by Peyton Burdick and a two-run home run from Gabe Snyder.

JD Orr reached on an infield single with one out in the top of the fifth and came around to score on a groundout by Snyder to push the WSU lead to 6-0.

Wright State added a run in the top of the sixth and another in the seventh to go in front 8-0.

In the seventh inning, Penguins Blaze Glenn and Dickerson hit back-to-back, one-out singles and Web Charles walked to load the bases.

Austin Trace was hit by a pitch to bring home Glenn for YSU’s first run. Nasonti followed with a two-run single.

The win allowed Wright State to complete a season sweep.

Zane Collins earned the win for the Raiders after allowing three runs on four hits over 6.2 innings. Alex Bellardini suffered the loss after surrendering five runs on four hits over three innings.

TENNIS

Women defeat IUC to win Horizon

The Youngstown State women’s tennis team defeated Illinpic-Chicago 4-0 on Sunday to win a fifth straight Horizon League Championship.

YSU (16-10) will advance to the NCAA Tennis Championships for the fifth straight year.

The Penguins came out strong, winning the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 singles.

At No. 1, Sofia Macias and Tamara Teufl trailed 2-0 at the outset of the contest before scoring the next five points. However, UIC’s Georgie Sanders and Lejla Colic battled back to get within 5-4, including fitting off a match point at 5-3.

On serve, the Penguins jumped out to a 40-0 lead, but the Flames were able to hold off the Penguins for two points. YSU claimed a 6-4 win when UIC hit a return into the net.

At No. 3, Ana Stroe and Anastasiia Khokhlova jumped out to a 2-0 lead before UIC tied the match at two. The Penguins went ahead 4-2 of Rodriguez and Seifert and eventually were on serve at 5-4. At 40-30, Stroe hit a winner to clinch the doubles point for YSU.

In singles, YSU quickly won first sets at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5. At No. 5. Teufl won her opener 6-0. At No. 3, Khoklhova picked up a 6-1 win and at No. 4 Hassim picked up a 6-2 win.
