CLASSES

Nami Mahoning Valley will present its Spring Family To Family course, a free 12-week education class for families living with mental illness. It is taught by NAMI-trained individuals who have lived with a person who has serious mental illness. The course offers information about diagnosis, medications, confidentiality, community resources, communication skills for families in crisis and more. The class takes place at 6 p.m. every Tuesday through June 26 at 201 Wick Ave., Youngstown, in the First Presbyterian Church building. FESTIVALS

Simply Slavic will host its eighth annual Simply Slavic festival from noon to midnight June 16 on Federal Plaza East. Organizers are seeking authentically Slavic retail, craft, fine art and food vendors for its marketplace and food tents. There is space for 15 food vendors and 10 marketplace vendors. Also, anyone interested in learning the dances, classes will take place from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. today at the St. George Croatian Center, 3200 Vestal Road, Youngstown. FUNDRAISERS

Auxiliary of the Oblate Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus will host its fourth annual fundraiser from 6 to 11 p.m. June 2 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Basilica in Youngstown. The evening will feature Italian food and flair with a cookie table. There will be dancing, an auction, a raffle and prize of $1,000. Bedford Trails Golf Course, 713 Bedford Road, Coitsville, will host its annual “Bub” Heldman Memorial Golf Outing on May 26. Proceeds will benefit the Heldman SHS Scholar-Athlete Scholarship. Shotgun start at 8 a.m. and there will be lunch, dinner, golf prizes, raffles and an opportunity to meet the 2018 scholarship winner.

Girard Multi-Generational Center’s annual fundraiser “Cars are the Stars 4” will include two special raffles this year. Winners will be announced the day of the show, June 2 (rain date, June 9). Tickets are $5 for each raffle. The first raffle is for a 55-inch 4K UHD TV, and the second is for a $250 Visa gift card sponsored by Windsor House Inc. Winners do not need to be present, and all proceeds will benefit the center. Salem Regional Medical Center’s Foundation and the Catalpa Grove Farm in Columbiana are partnering to host a Mother’s Day fundraiser from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 11 at Catalpa Grove Farm, 41473 state Route 14. Those shopping at Catalpa Grove Farm for Mother’s Day can present a special flyer at check-out and Catalpa’s will donate 10 percent of all eligible purchases to the SRMC Foundation. Ladies Guild of Redeemer Lutheran Church, 2305 S. Canfield-Niles Road, Austintown, will host its semi-annual rummage sale from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday. Beatitude House will host its annual Wine Taste & Auction at 5:30 p.m. May 11 at The Embassy in Boardman. Children’s Miracle Network’s ninth annual Fun Ride and Poker Run will take place at 10 a.m. May 20. All proceeds benefit Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley, Beeghly Campus, Boardman. Route maps and rules will be available at registration beginning at 10 a.m. at BikeTown Harley-Davidson, 5700 Interstate Blvd., Austintown. The ride will begin at noon, which includes four card stops on a 90 mile route that ends at Social 45, 6885 state Route 45, Lisbon. Friends of the Mahoning River will host a canoe and kayak paddle June 9 from the newly constructed Girard Launch in collaboration with the Trumbull Canoe trails. Paddlers will leave the dock at 10:30 and will arrive at the B&O Station for a picnic.

Jewish Community Relations Council and the Ohio Genealogical Society Mahoning County Chapter will host a lecture on Jewish genealogy, “An Evening with Israel Pickholtz: A Jewish Genealogist’s Discovery of Family History” at 7 p.m. May 8 at the Jewish Community Center, 505 Gypsy Lane, Youngstown. Israel Pickholtz, a native of Pittsburgh who has been living in Israel since 1973, began working seriously on his families’ genealogies in 1994. Since his early retirement in 2008, he has been accepting genealogy clients from Israel and abroad. His flagship work is the Pickholtz Project, a single surname project which serves to identify and reconnect all Pickholtz descendants. Alongside his work as a professional genealogist, Pickholtz became heavily involved in genetic genealogy in 2013. Sutliff Museum is announcing its new exhibit that will run through August. The exhibit is “Being a Victorian: Hygiene History of the the 19th Century,” and explores the hygiene habits of men and women in the late 1800s. Suzie’s Dogs & Drafts, 34 N. Phelps St., Youngstown, in cooperation with the Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley, is sponsoring a “Donate a Hot Dog” campaign to help provide food to the area’s homeless population. Throughout the year, Suzie’s customers can donate a hot dog for the hungry and write a note of support. Donations will be matched dog-for-dog by the restaurant. On the second Wednesday of every month, employees will provide a meal and bring all the notes for the overnight residents and meal visitors at the Rescue Mission. The goal is food for the body and encouragement for the spirit. The project is inspired by the shooting death last November of Colin Brown. Brown worked in the restaurant industry, managing newly opened restaurants and helping get them off the ground. He was a volunteer with the Common Wealth Kitchen Incubator in Youngstown, was known for his pay it forward attitude and always helping those in need.
