1900: Engineer John Luther “Casey” Jones of the Illinois Central Railroad dies in a train wreck near Vaughan, Miss., after staying at the controls in a successful effort to save the passengers.

1939: The New York World’s Fair officially opens with a ceremony that included an address by President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

1968: New York City police forcibly remove student demonstrators occupying five buildings at Columbia University.

1973: President Richard Nixon announces the resignations of top aides H.R. Haldeman and John Ehrlichman, Attorney General Richard G. Kleindienst and White House counsel John Dean, who was actually fired.

1975: The Vietnam War ends as the South Vietnamese capital of Saigon falls to Communist forces.

1993: Don Hanni III will run as an independent for mayor of Youngstown even though Ohio law would require him to resign his state Department of Transportation job to do so.

Sisters Michele Dietz and Kelly O’Brien give birth to daughters 24 hours apart at St. Elizabeth Hospital. They are sharing a room with their daughters, Samantha Rae Dietz and Kathryn Mackenzie O’Brien.

Three young men, two from Boardman and one from Niles, are charged with arson after a drain-cleaner bomb explodes in the restroom of the Boardman Denny’s restaurant. At least 10 such homemade bombs have exploded or been found unexploded in Boardman, Poland, Howland and Warren.

1978: Mahoning County’s $22 million Meander Water Pollution Control Facility will be dedicated. The Rev. Thomas McCarthy, pastor of St. Michael Church, Canfield, will give the invocation, and the Rev. Donald R. Loomis, pastor of Evansville Baptist Church, Mineral Ridge, will deliver the benediction.

With one day left to apply, only nine applications have been received for superintendent of Youngstown city schools. Robert Pegues, whose resignation becomes effective July 31, is paid $34,000 a year.

A Poland pilot, Edward B. Feil, 53, is killed when his single-engine plane crashes in a wooded area near New Castle, Pa., not far from his father’s home.

1968: Jacob M. Ettinger of Poland is named to a new position of superintendent of production control at Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co. Peter J. Snyder of of Hubbard is his assistant.

A Mahoning County jail inmate serving time for inciting a riot faces charges of walking away from the jail and stealing and crashing a deputy’s personal car.

Columbiana County commissioners reverse course for the second time and vote unanimously to spend $6,435 for 90 beds and mattresses at the county home.

1943: A training camp for 30,000 paratroopers at Hoffman, N.C., has been named in memory of Pvt. John Thomas Mackall of Wellsville, a former Youngstown student and the first American paratrooper killed in North Africa.

Two small boys are asphyxiated and three other children narrowly escape when fire swept their Market Street apartment where they were locked in while their parents attended a movie. Dead are brothers Jimmy and Bobby Williams, 8 and 5. In South Side Hospital are Teddy Williams, 9; Richard, 3, and Norma Lee, 2.

H.K. Rayen, retired principal of Princeton Junior High School, resigns from the Youngstown park and recreation commission after moving to Poland.
