Liberty schools, parents, NAACP and Urban League discuss enrollment policy
LIBERTY
Superintendent Joseph Nohra, school board president Calvin Jones and a few Liberty parents met with members of the NAACP Trumbull County Chapter and the Trumbull County Urban League in a closed Monday night meeting. They discussed a resolution passed a week ago stating Liberty will not grant consent to white students open enrolling in Girard City Schools.
Annette McCoy, president of the NAACP Trumbull County Chapter, said the school officials gave data on the students they are losing to open enrollment and how it affects the school district financially. She said they discussed the option of trying to secure state vouchers for students who open enroll.
Thomas Conley, president of the Warren/Trumbull Urban League, said he is looking into the data and the section of the Ohio Revised Code that allows the school district to pass the resolution.
Nohra said the discussion was productive and he was appreciative that the organizations reached out, and the board plans to continue to meet with them.
