Lacatena leads team to win

Freshman Milena Lacatena posted a two-out, pinch-hit single in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at 1-1 and scored the game-winning run on an error to lift the Youngstown State softball team to a 2-1 win over Green Bay on Friday afternoon.

Down to their final out, freshman Nikki Saibene double off the left-field fence to keep the inning alive and scored when Lacatena singled to center field and advanced to second on a throwing error. Yazmine Romero reached on a error and moved Lacatena to third, who scored the game-winning run on another fielding error off the bat of Maddi Lusk.

YSU has won eight straight and improves to 23-20 overall and 13-6 in the Horizon League. Green Bay falls to 9-32 overall and 6-11 in the league.

Freshman Elle Buffenbarger tossed a complete-game six hitter with six strikeouts. The lone run she allowed a lead-off home run to Chyanne Onstab.

The Penguins and Phoenix conclude the series with a doubleheader, today, at 2 p.m.

Men advance to semis

The third-seeded Youngstown State men’s tennis team opened play at the Horizon League Championships with a 4-0 win over No. 6 seed Wright State on Friday afternoon at the Schwartz Tennis Center.

YSU advances to take on No. 2 seed Cleveland State in the semifinals today. The match is slated for a 3 p.m. start outdoors/6 p.m. indoors. The Penguins have won a season-best five straight contests.

The Penguins (12-10) won the doubles point winning two of the three matches and won the first three completed singles contests to sweep the Raiders (13-12).

The Penguins won the doubles point with victories at No. 1 and No. 3. At No. 1, Danylo Veremeichuk and Yossi Dahan won 6-4 while Matthew Kritzinger and Bassem El Mekawi won 6-4 at No. 3.

The first Penguin to win his singles match was Dahan at No. 5. Dahan picked up a 6-3, 6-1 victory over WSU’s Javier Alvarez de la Villa.

At No. 1, Veremeichuk earned a 6-3, 7-6 victory over Michal Kianicka to give YSU its second singles win and third point of the dual. Joao Garretto clinched the win for the Penguins with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 win over Fernando Nardelli at No. 2 singles.

YSU had leads at No. 3 and No. 5 singles while Alonso Lauz’s match was tied at one set apiece.

WSU bats doom Penguins

Wright State hit four home runs after tailing 2-0 to hand the Youngstown State baseball team a 7-2 loss at home Friday.

Peyton Burdick hit two homers including a three-run home run to in the top of the eighth to give the Raiders a five-run cushion.

Wright State held YSU to six hits. The Penguins were 1 for 9 with runners in scoring position.

The Penguins jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third after a bases loaded walk by Blaze Glenn to force home Lucas Nasonti. The Penguins added another on a sacrifice fly by Drew Dickerson with scored Trey Birdis.

Nasonti and Austin Trace each went 2 for 4.

South Range graduate Greg Dunham allowed six runs on six hits and a walk in seven innings pitched.

Zack Minney, Colin Clark and Austin Butler all pitched in the top of the eighth. Minney didn’t record in an out and Clark recorded on out.

Butler pitched 12/3 scoreless innings after coming on with one out in the eighth. He allowed a hit and a walk.

Ryan Weiss pitched six innings for the Raiders. Weiss allowed two runs on four hits and five walks.

Wright State’s Gabe Snyder hit a solo homer in the fifth and Seth Gray hit a two-run home run in the fourth to take a 3-2 lead.

YSU will play Wright State in the secod game of their three-game series today. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Eastwood Field.
