1950: Britain formally recognizes the state of Israel.

1968: Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey declares his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for president, less than a month after President Lyndon B. Johnson said he would not run for re-election.

1978: Fifty-one construction workers plunge to their deaths when a scaffold inside a cooling tower at the Pleasants Power Station site in West Virginia fell 168 feet to the ground.

2008: Afghan President Hamid Karzai escapes an attempt on his life during a ceremony in Kabul marking Afghanistan’s victory over Soviet occupation in the 1980s. Three other people were killed in the rocket and rifle attack claimed by the Taliban.

2017: David Dao, the airline passenger who was violently dragged off a flight after refusing to give up his seat, settles with United for an undisclosed sum. Cellphone video of the April 9 confrontation aboard a jetliner at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport had sparked widespread public outrage over the way Dao was treated.

1993: Residents of a small Austintown neighborhood are asking all township residents to help them stop what may become the township’s fifth massage parlor.

Dr. Leo Oxley, chief medical officer of the Department of Veterans Affairs Outpatient Clinic in Youngstown, says he is frustrated by chronic understaffing, and he plans to leave Ohio to work at another VA facility.

A 22-year-old inmate at the Trumbull Correctional Institution is found in his bunk with a stab wound of the neck. He is in stable condition at a Warren hospital. Authorities believe the stabbing is linked to inmates transferred to Warren after the prisoner riot in Lucasville.

1978: Mary Stevenson, a 94-year-old resident of the Assumption Nursing Home, wins $7,000 as an Ohio Lottery finalist. A friend buys her two tickets each week and mails them to her at the nursing home.
