MVCA recruiting night Monday at MVR

YOUNGSTOWN

The Mahoning Valley Coaches Association is hosting its 18th annual Football Recruiting Night at the MVR (Mahoning Valley Restaurant) Monday at 6:30 p.m.

High school football coaches from Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana and Ashtabula counties are welcome.

Representatives from 45-50 college football programs are expected to attend.

High school coaches should bring player profiles. Highlight CDs are optional.

Reavie-Glover share Zurich Classic lead

AVONDALE, La.

Chez Reavie and Lucas Glover teamed to shoot a 12-under 60 on Thursday for a share of the Zurich Classic lead with China’s Zhang Xinjun and Dou Zecheng.

Reavie and Glover each had six birdies in the best-ball format, pushing through soggy weather early in the round before conditions cleared at TPC Louisiana. Zhang and Dou birdied four of their final five holes.

Tony Finau-Daniel Summerhays, Chris Paisley-Tommy Fleetwood, J.J. Henry-Tom Hoge, Michael Kim-Andrew Putnam, Kevin Kisner-Scott Brown and Troy Merritt-Brendon de Jonge were tied for third at 62.

Jason Day and Ryan Ruffels shot 64, Masters champion Patrick Reed and Patrick Cantlay had a 65, and Jordan Spieth and Ryan Palmer were at 66.

This is the second year that two-player teams have competed at the Zurich Classic.

The unusual tournament features best-ball play in the first and third rounds and alternate shot in the second and final rounds.

Ko shoots 68 for LPGA lead

DALY CITY, Calif.

Lydia Ko was back on top at Lake Merced.

Ko shot a 4-under 68 on a chilly Thursday morning at the LPGA MEDIHEAL Championship for a share of the lead halfway through the first round. Jessica Korda, Caroline Hedwall and In-Kyung Kim joined Ko atop the leaderboard in the LPGA Tour’s return to Lake Merced after a year away.

The Swinging Skirts LPGA winner at the course in 2014 and 2015, Ko eagled the par-5 fifth and had four birdies and a bogey. The 21-year-old from New Zealand has 14 LPGA Tour wins, the last in July 2016.

Korda, playing alongside Kim a group ahead of Ko, also eagled the fifth and had four birdies and a bogey. Korda won in Thailand in February in her return from reconstructive jaw surgery.

Hedwall and Kim each had five birdies and a bogey.

Sei Young Kim, Charley Hull and Celine Herbin shot 69.

Michelle Wie had a 74, and ANA Inspiration winner Pernilla Lindberg shot 79.

Inbee Park, Lexi Thompson, Shanshan Feng, Brooke Henderson and Stacy Lewis played in the afternoon.

Warriors’ Curry practicing again

OAKLAND, Calif.

Stephen Curry resumed full practice with contact and could play for the defending champion Golden State Warriors as soon as Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinals Saturday night against New Orleans.

Curry looked strong as he practiced Thursday wearing a protective brace over his sprained left knee, which has sidelined him since the injury March 23 — the same day he returned from a six-game absence because of a hurt right ankle.

Coach Steve Kerr is calling Curry questionable for Saturday. That could change if the two-time NBA MVP still feels fine Friday and is fine after one more day of full practice before the Pelicans visit Oracle Arena to begin the best-of-seven series.

“Steph practiced at 100 percent, he did everything, he looked good,” Kerr said.

“What we have to do is see how his body responds the rest of the day, put him through another practice tomorrow. I think he needs to string together two good days but it was very positive today. ... I think it’s been coming along pretty well.”
