Bonding with babies and books

This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize on Thursdays at 10 a.m. at the Canfield library.

Tales & Talk for 2s and 3s

Join the Canfield library on Tuesdays during May at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.

Celebrate Cinco de Mayo

Join the Canfield library on May 5 at 2:30 p.m. for a celebration of Mexican stories, games and music. Make a craft and design a sombrero cookie. This event is for children of all ages.

Gotta Move story time

This event is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a caregiver. Join the Canfield library on Wednesdays at 10 a.m. and Thursdays at 11:30 a.m. during May for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play.

Lego My Library

Meet and enjoy creating Lego designs at the Canfield library on May 12 from 3-4 p.m. and May 16 from 6-7 p.m. Legos will be provided. This event is for children who are ages 6 and up.

Coloring for grown-ups

Join the Canfield library on May 1 at 6:30 p.m. and May 21 at 10 a.m. and tap into your creative side with the newest relaxation craze: coloring for grown-ups. Colored pencils and markers will be provided along with intricate abstract and themed design sheets. This event is for adults and teens.

Movie night

Join the Canfield library on May 3 at 6 p.m. for a Thursday Night Movie where they will be watching a newly released DVD. Feel free to bring your own small snacks and drinks. This event is for adults and teens. Children under the age of 7 must be accompanied by an adult. The movie will be either PG or PG 13.

Stephen King Constant Readers club

Join the Canfield library on May 8 at 6:30 p.m. to discuss his riveting stories, as well as other captivating tales by his peers. This month they will dive into an informal discussion of “Wizard and Glass,” the fourth installment of King’s magnum opus “The Dark Tower” series, followed by a preview of new and exciting upcoming titles. This event is for adults.

Blood drive

There will be a blood drive by the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross at the Canfield library on May 24 from 2-6 p.m. to serve the needs of St. Elizabeth Hospital. For appointments, call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767). This event is for adults.

Chair Yoga

Beginner applique at your library

Adults and teens ages 12 and older are invited to learn applique from representatives of the Youngstown Embroiderer’s Guild at the Canfield library on May 10 at 10 a.m. Participants will make a pin cushion; all supplies will be provided. Tales to tails

Go to the Canfield library on May 14 at 6 p.m. and read to your favorite therapy dogs, which helps develop reading skills, promotes confidence and encourages a love of reading. Bring a book of your choice or the librarians will find one for you. This event is for children in grades K and up. Therapy dogs are provided by Pawz for People, a Community Partner of Pet Partners, a local Pet Therapy group.

Playtime at your library

Prepare for kindergarten through play with this event at the Canfield library on May 11 at 10 a.m. Read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for kindergarten. This event is for ages 2-6.

Project Funway toilet paper and tin foil challenge

Create your own fashionable outfits using only toilet paper and tin foil, then stroll down the runway in your works of art at this event at the Canfield library on May 19 at 2:30 p.m. All materials and snacks will be provided. Blood pressure screening

There will be a blood pressure screening by the Salem Area Visiting Nurse Association on May 16 from 1-2 p.m. at the Canfield library.

Movie night focuses on the 1980’s

Join the Canfield library on May 17 at 6 p.m. for a blast from the past where they will relive classic movies from the 80’s. Feel free to bring your own small snacks and drinks. Forever Young book club

If you love reading YA books, join the Canfield library on May 15 at 6:30 p.m. where they will be reading and discussing a different Young Adult book every month. This month we will be discussing “Dumplin’” by Julie Murphy. This event is for adults.

Register for Summer Discovery beginning on May 1

Visit a Mahoning County public library or sign up online on or after May 1 to register for this year’s Summer Discovery Program. This year’s theme is “Libraries Rock!” It will run from May 1 until July 31. Sign up and receive a coupon and Mahoning Valley Scrappers ticket voucher. Children who complete the program have the chance to have breakfast with Marc Brown, author/illustrator of the “Arthur” series. Children can complete activities or read books to earn prizes (while supplies last) and to earn a chance to win a gift card. Children who complete the program by July 22 will be invited to a breakfast event on July 27, sponsored by Sweeney Chevy Buick GMC. Teens and adults can also participate in Summer Discovery by reading books to earn prizes and earn a chance to win a gift card.

Gathering Place event to be May 14

Lord of Life Church, located at 550 N. Broad Street in Canfield, will be the location of a Gathering Place event on May 14 at 11 a.m. There will be a speaker from Melnick Medical Museum at YSU, speaking on “Quack Medicine and the FDA.” This museum is dedicated to documenting the history of medicine, especially as it relates to the local area. Buckeye Hospice will provide free blood pressure readings at the beginning of the program, so arrive promptly at 11 a.m. Lunch will be provided by the Woodlands. This is a free community outreach social program offered to all senior citizens that is offered on the second Monday of the month every month. Mill Creek ABWA to meet on May 8

The Mill Creek Chapter of ABWA (American Business Women’s Association) will host its May 8 meeting at A La Cart Catering in Canfield beginning with networking at 6 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. The menu for the evening includes southern baked chicken, beef tips over noodles, sandtrap potatoes, peas and carrots, salad, applesauce, Jell-O and dessert. The public is welcome.

May monthly square dance announced

The Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance on May 12 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. Neil Harner will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be calling the line dances. This will be a high/low dance with alternating tips for new dancers currently taking lessons and tips for more experienced dancers. Dress is casual and light refreshments will be served. The Next Step Group begins meetings in Canfield

A 12-step group to help people break the bonds of codependency will begin meeting at the Ursuline Center on April 30. The Next Step Group will follow the same format and philosophy of other 12 step groups. Codependency creates an imbalance where people put others’ needs before their own. The meetings will help attendees find ways to move beyond codependency and focus on gratitude, find awareness of inner guidance, create personal desires using the law of attraction, celebrate accomplishments and growth, acknowledge personal strengths and learn the healthy way to serve your brothers, sisters and self. Meetings will be Monday evenings beginning on April 30 from 7-8 p.m. at the Ursuline Center. There is no charge to join this group, which preserves anonymity, but a goodwill offering of $1 per meeting would be appreciated to cover the cost of coffee, etc. The Ursuline Center is located at 4280 Shields Road in Canfield and is a ministry of the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown. Nominations open for awards ceremony

In celebration of National Emergency Medical Service (EMS) week, Steward Health Care System will host its First National “EMS Stewards of the Community” Awards Ceremony on May 24 at The Squaw Creek Country Club. Steward, which operates four local hospitals, including Sharon Regional Medical Center, Trumbull Regional Medical Center, Northside Regional Medical Center and Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital, will recognize several Emergency Medical Services (EMS) providers for going “above and beyond” in their interactions with patients at each of Steward’s community hospitals. To nominate an EMS provider in your community for an “EMS Stewards of the Community” award, visit http://info.steward.org/emsaward2018-OHPA.html. Nominations must be received by April 27. The “EMS Stewards of the Community” awards show appreciation for emergency medical responders and dispatchers, emergency medical technicians, advanced emergency medical technicians and paramedics who not only carry out the noble work of caring for others, but do so with a high degree of expertise, professionalism and compassion. An internal committee of physicians, nurses and EMS Managers will review nominations and select recipients for each of the Steward hospitals.

Strawberry 5K and Fun Run to benefit food bank

On June 9, Molnar Farms is hosting an inaugural Strawberry 5K and Fun Run through the farm grounds, located at 3115 E. Western Reserve Road in Poland. Proceeds after expenses and all food donations will benefit Second Harvest Food Bank. The cost for the 5K is $30 before May 5 and $35 after that date. The Fun Run is $10. The 5K begins at 9 a.m. and the Fun Run begins at 10:30 a.m. Runners that sign up for the 5K before May 21 will receive a free race T-shirt. Basket auction fundraiser to be April 29

The Mill Creek Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association will sponsor its annual basket auction on April 29 at the Ursuline Center, located at 4280 Shields Road in Canfield. The doors open at 12:30 p.m. and the drawing will begin promptly at 3 p.m. Donations at the door will be $5, which will include a chance at the door prizes, 25 chances at the table gifts and a refreshment. Other refreshments are available. The auction benefits the education fund for the chapter. Tickets can be purchased at the door.

Local church hosts fundraising event

Canfield Presbyterian Church will be hosting its annual Trash & Treasure Sale on April 28 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Admittance to the sale is free and open to the public. It will feature slightly-used and reasonably-priced furniture, household goods, books, toys, baby items, electronics and sporting equipment, as well as jewelry, collectibles and antiques. All proceeds will benefit the church’s 2018 International Mission Team, which is traveling to the Dominican Republic and Haiti in July. Donations for the sale are also being accepted weekdays at the church between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. until April 23. No clothing, shoes, old computers or non-flat screen TVs will be accepted. The church is located at 140 W. Main St. in Canfield.

Local shrine club to host dinner event

The Youngstown Shrine Club will be hosting a spaghetti dinner on April 29 at the club’s main hall. Tickets are $10 for adults and dinner will be served from 11:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. The meal includes spaghetti and meatballs, salad, bread and a beverage, as well as dessert. This is a community event and the public is invited to attend. Tickets can be purchased in advance from any club officer or on the day of the event; carry-outs are also available. Guided labyrinth walk season begins at The Ursuline Health and Wellness Center

The Ursuline Health and Wellness Center, located at 4280 Shields Road, begins its 2018 Guided Labyrinth Walk season with a walk on April 15 at 2 p.m. This year’s themes celebrate aspects of St. Angela Merici’s introduction to her Counsels. St. Angela founded the Ursuline order in 1535. All persons of faith are invited to participate in these free events. Walks generally take 20 minutes to half an hour. All walks are scheduled weather-permitting. The list of walks is: May 17 at 6:30 p.m. - “Get Moving,” June 21 at 6:30 p.m. - “Be Confident,” July 19 at 6:30 p.m. - “Risk New Things,” Aug. 16 at 6:30 p.m. - “Stick with It,” Sept. 20 at 6:30 p.m. - “Get on Your Knees” and Oct. 14 at 2 p.m. - “Expect Big Surprises.” The Ursuline Center Labyrinth is a ministry of the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown and open year-round from dawn to dusk for all persons of faith. There is no cost to use the labyrinth, which is handicapped-accessible and offers ample parking. Printed guides are provided at the Labyrinth’s entrance giving suggestions for following the path, but there is no right or wrong way to experience the sacred walk.

Columbus Children’s Theatre presents “The Three Little Pigs”

Full of laughter, fun and audience participation, The Columbus Children’s Theatre’s adaptation of “The Three Little Pigs” is a great way to celebrate National Library Week. Join the Canfield library on April 28 at 2 p.m. and find out what really happened when the Three Little Pigs met the Big Bad Wolf on their way to seek their fortune and build a home. This program is for the family.

It’s raining cats and dogs and turtles and frogs

Join in the fun to vote for your favorite umbrella in the Canfield library Early Learning Area and help them choose their April winner. One vote per person per day and your vote enters you into a drawing for a gift certificate prize to Dough House Cookies at the Canfield library. This activity is for all ages during regular library hours during the month of April.

Pink Ribbon Golf Classic to be in July

The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 16. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. The Mahoning Valley Corvettes joins in with Salem car cruise for event

The call to take over The Salem Super cruise, Salem’s largest annual event attracting thousands, was recently answered by The Mahoning Valley Corvettes. The non-profit car club dates back to 1962 including members from every surrounding community and Salem. Many of the club members have enjoyed the Salem Super Cruise and will now partner with the City of Salem to put on the event entering its 14th year. The Salem Super Cruise is open to all cars and trucks, not just Corvettes. Motorcycles are also welcome. The weekend benefits the Second Harvest Foodbank, which feeds many hungry local families. The event will take place June 7-10 and will feature activities, some free, including a parade, car show, food, live bands and more. The Mahoning Valley Corvettes look forward to partnering with the City of Salem to provide a this weekend for the entire family.

Overeaters Anonymous to have local meetings

Overeaters Anonymous is offering meetings at several local locations and on a variety of days. On Saturdays at 10 a.m., there will be a meeting at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in the Church Hall, Room 2, located at 4453 Warren-Sharon Road in Vienna, Ohio. This location is handicapped accessible. On Sundays at 7 p.m., there will be a meeting at Shenango Presbyterian Church, located at 3144 Wilmington Road (Route 18) in New Castle, Pa. GA to meet twice this week

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.
