Bonding with babies and books
This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. at the Boardman library.
Tales & Talk for 2s and 3s
Join the Boardman library on Wednesdays during May at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.
Lego My Library
Meet and enjoy creating Lego designs at the Boardman library on May 12 at 10 a.m. Legos will be provided. This event is for children who are ages 6 and up.
TAB (Teen Advisory Board) meeting
Help plan and support teen activities at the library by joining the Boardman library on May 2 from 6:30-8 p.m. Meet new people and have fun. Newcomers are always welcome. This event is for teens.
Blood pressure screening
There will be a blood pressure screening by the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross at the Boardman library on May 7 from 12:30-2:30 p.m.
Puzzle swap
Swap six of your once-done jigsaw puzzles with others at the Boardman library on May 9 at 4 p.m. This event takes place every second Wednesday of the month.
Playtime at your library
Prepare for kindergarten through play with this event at the Boardman library on May 16 at 10 a.m. Read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for kindergarten. This event is for ages 2-6.
Mother’s Day Night Owl event
There will be stories and a craft for children ages 4-5 at this event at the Boardman library on May 10 at 7 p.m. Preschoolers must attend with an adult to this half-hour program to celebrate “Moms.”
Apprentice’s Inn
Join the Boardman library on May 16 from 6:30-8 p.m. as they finish their beginners Dungeons and Dragons campaign for the spring. Refreshments and snacks are provided. This event is for teens in grades 7-12.
Reader’s Choice book club
The Reader’s Choice book club will discuss “The Wright Brothers,” by David McCullough at their meeting on May 14 at 7 p.m. at the Boardman library. Share your favorite books and find out what new ones are being published. They will preview June’s book “Jane Eyre” by Charlotte Bronte. This event is for adults.
Friends of the Boardman library to meet
There will be a Friends of the Boardman Library presentation followed by a meeting on May 14 at 10 a.m. at the Boardman library. The program is “Writing Children’s Books” with Hugh Earnhart.
Scholarship applications now avaialble

Register for Summer Discovery beginning on May 1
Visit a Mahoning County public library or sign up online on or after May 1 to register for this year’s Summer Discovery Program. This year’s theme is “Libraries Rock!” It will run from May 1 until July 31. Sign up and receive a coupon and Mahoning Valley Scrappers ticket voucher. Children who complete the program have the chance to have breakfast with Marc Brown, author/illustrator of the “Arthur” series. Children can complete activities or read books to earn prizes (while supplies last) and to earn a chance to win a gift card. Children who complete the program by July 22 will be invited to a breakfast event on July 27, sponsored by Sweeney Chevy Buick GMC. Teens and adults can also participate in Summer Discovery by reading books to earn prizes and earn a chance to win a gift card.
Lord of Life Church, 550 N. Broad Street in Canfield, will be the location of a Gathering Place event May 14 at 11 a.m. There will be a speaker from Melnick Medical Museum at YSU, speaking on “Quack Medicine and the FDA.” This museum is dedicated to documenting the history of medicine, especially as it relates to the local area. Buckeye Hospice will provide free blood pressure readings at the beginning of the program, so arrive at 11 a.m. Lunch will be provided by the Woodlands. This is a free community outreach social program offered to all senior citizens, offered on the second Monday of the month every month. Different games and activities are offered each month. Mill Creek ABWA to meet on May 8
The Mill Creek Chapter of ABWA (American Business Women’s Association) will host its May 8 meeting at A La Cart Catering in Canfield beginning with networking at 6 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. The menu for the evening includes southern baked chicken, beef tips over noodles, sandtrap potatoes, peas and carrots, salad, applesauce, Jell-O and dessert. The public is welcome.
Basket auction fundraiser to be April 29
The Mill Creek Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association will sponsor its annual basket auction on April 29 at the Ursuline Center, located at 4280 Shields Road in Canfield. The doors open at 12:30 p.m. and the drawing will begin promptly at 3 p.m. Donations at the door will be $5, which will include a chance at the door prizes, 25 chances at the table gifts and a refreshment. Other refreshments are available. The auction benefits the education fund for the chapter. Tickets can be purchased at the door.
Local shrine club to host dinner event
The Youngstown Shrine Club will be hosting a spaghetti dinner on April 29 at the club’s main hall. Tickets are $10 for adults and dinner will be served from 11:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. The meal includes spaghetti and meatballs, salad, bread and a beverage, as well as dessert. This is a community event and the public is invited to attend. Tickets can be purchased in advance from any club officer or on the day of the event; carry-outs are also available. Boardman Park’s garden to start planting
While it may still be too early for digging and planting it’s not too early to join the community garden and start planning what fresh vegetables will be on your dinner table this summer. Whether you have a green thumb and are an experienced gardener or whether you are a beginner, community gardens allow you to experience the joys of gardening, promote healthy eating habits and build new relationships with others in the community. The garden is located at the Historic Southern Stables on Washington Boulevard. Registration for the 10 feet by 20 feet garden plots begins on April 2 at the Boardman Park Office, located at 375 Boardman-Poland Road, and are available for a fee of $25. Your fee includes the garden plot, water and periodic classes/instructions on gardening. Due to the limited number of plots available, registration is limited to Boardman residents only. May monthly square dance announced
The Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance on May 12 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. Neil Harner will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be calling the line dances. This will be a high/low dance with alternating tips for new dancers currently taking lessons and tips for more experienced dancers. Dress is casual and light refreshments will be served. Local church hosts fundraising sale
The Boardman United Methodist Church, located at 6809 Market Street in Boardman, is hosting its spring trash and treasure sale event on May 2 and 3 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Thursday is bargain-bag day.
Park to host day camp during summer
Boardman Park’s Adventure Day Camp will soon begin. The goal of the camp is to offer young minds the opportunity to explore their imaginations, discover physical fitness, expand their knowledge of sports and develop a growing sense of adventure through diverse activities. The curriculum is designed to be age appropriate, educational and fun as the children participate in a daily schedule of arts and crafts, team building, creative arts, science and sports. Adventure Day Camp will run for 10 weeks, starting on June 11 and running through Aug. 17. The Camp hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. for children who have completed kindergarten through sixth grade. Arrangements can be made if you need to bring campers early or pick them up later for an additional charge. Registration begins on April 2. Students perform spring concert
The fifth-, sixth- and seventh-grade bands at the Boardman Middle Schools will present a spring band concert on May 31 at 7 p.m. in the Boardman High School Performing Arts Center. Admission/donations accepted at the door: adults - $3, students - $2 and senior citizens are admitted free of charge.
Strawberry 5K and Fun Run to benefit food bank
On June 9, Molnar Farms is hosting an inaugural Strawberry 5K and Fun Run through the farm grounds, located at 3115 E. Western Reserve Road in Poland. Proceeds after expenses and all food donations will benefit Second Harvest Food Bank. The cost for the 5K is $30 before May 5 and $35 after that date. The Fun Run is $10. The 5K begins at 9 a.m. and the Fun Run begins at 10:30 a.m. Runners that sign up for the 5K before May 21 will receive a free race T-shirt. Pink Ribbon Golf Classic to be in July
The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 16. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.
