Redeemer Lutheran Church hosts rummage sale

The Ladies Guild of Redeemer Lutheran Church, located at 2305 S. Canfield - Niles Road in Austintown, will host its semi-annual rummage sale on May 4 from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. and on May 5 from 10 a.m. until noon. All items will be available for a “free-will” offering. Clothes, books, toys and household goods are just some of the items offered. All proceeds from this sale will benefit the Rescue Mission of Youngstown for their building project. Lunch will be available on Friday at regular prices.

Immaculate Mile race to be May 31

The Immaculate Mile at the Festival Race will take place on May 31 ar 7 p.m. at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, located at 4490 Norquest Blvd. in Austintown. Runners of all experience levels are welcome. The entry fee is $10 with all proceeds benefitting the church. There will be top overall finisher and age group awards. There will be a free children’s dash event for children who are ages 10-years-old and younger. The children’s dash begins at 7 p.m. with the mile race beginning at its conclusion. Night Out raises funds with sale

Austintown’s National Night Out Celebration will be hosting its second annual Trash and Treasure Sale fundraiser on May 27 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. at Austintown Township Park. The event is taking place rain or shine, and is open to all. Spaces are still available and run $10 per (parking) space. Pre-kindergarten story time

This program, which will take place at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesdays during May at the Austintown library, is for 4- and 5-year-olds to help develop pre-literacy and kindergarten readiness skills. Use books, stories, rhymes, music, movement and crafts to help your child get ready for kindergarten.

Bonding with babies and books

This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-3 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. at the Austintown library.

Tales & Talk for 2s and 3s

Join the Austintown library on Wednesdays during May at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.

Gotta Move story time

This event is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a caregiver. Join the Austintown library on Thursdays during May at 10 a.m. for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play.

Lego My Library

Meet and enjoy creating Lego designs at the Austintown library on May 2 at 6 p.m. Legos will be provided. This event is for children who are ages 6 and up.

Read to Reese

To boost your reading confidence, come and read to Reese, a therapy dog from Pet Partners at the Austintown library on May 5 at 11 a.m. Bring your own book, or the librarians will find one for you, and read to a furry friend. Fundamentals of music theory

Learn the fundamentals of music theory from Shirley Bartlett on May 3 at 2 p.m. at the Austintown library. Topics covered in this five-week session will include basic theory like the names of lines and spaces and more advanced concepts like major and minor scales. Reservations are needed for each session. This event is for teens and adults.

Strategy board games at the library

Do you like to play strategy board games? Go to the Austintown library on May 5 at 3 p.m. to play games like “Ticket to Ride,” “Settlers of Catan” and “Carcassonne.” Play what is there or bring your own to share. Light refreshments will be served. This event is for adults and teens.

Mystery and Tea book club

Join the Austintown library on May 8 at 6 p.m. to sip tea and discuss your latest mystery novel find. This event is for adults.

Stamping with Cindy

Learn to create your own handmade cards using stamps, punches and other fun tools at the Austintown library on May 3 at 6:30 p.m. and May 4 at 11 a.m. Sign up to create each month’s greeting card with matching envelope. Page Turners book club

If you love books and are looking for a good read, attend the Page Turners book club meeting at the Austintown library on May 16 from 6-7 p.m. Hear what others are reading and share your favorite read, or just come in and join the fun. This event is for adults.

Blood drive

There will be a blood drive by the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross at the Austintown library on May 1 from 1-6 p.m. and May 19 from 10:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. to serve the needs of St. Elizabeth Hospital. For appointments, call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767). This event is for adults.

Memory loss, dementia and Alzheimer’s: the basics

If you or someone you know is affected by Alzheimer’s disease or dementia, it’s time to learn the facts. This program at the Austintown library on May 15 at 6:30 p.m. provides information on detection, causes and risk factors, stages of the disease, treatment and more. Playtime at your library

Prepare for kindergarten through play with this event at the Austintown library on May 14 at 6:30 p.m. Read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for kindergarten. This event is for ages 2-6.

STAR: Sit Together and Read

Michelle Elia, State Support Team Region 5 coordinator, will share practices, techniques and books that reinforce how to develop print awareness and print knowledge skills using read aloud techniques at this event at the Austintown library on May 11 at 9:30 a.m. This workshop is open to librarians, teachers, paraprofessionals, parents and anyone looking to make help children acquire skills needed for learning to read. Visit a Mahoning County public library or sign up online on or after May 1 to register for this year’s Summer Discovery Program. This year’s theme is “Libraries Rock!” It will run from May 1 until July 31. Sign up and receive a coupon and Mahoning Valley Scrappers ticket voucher. Children who complete the program have the chance to have breakfast with Marc Brown, author/illustrator of the “Arthur” series. Children can complete activities or read books to earn prizes (while supplies last) and to earn a chance to win a gift card. Children who complete the program by July 22 will be invited to a breakfast event on July 27, sponsored by Sweeney Chevy Buick GMC. Teens and adults can also participate in Summer Discovery by reading books to earn prizes and earn a chance to win a gift card.

Fairy gardens

Mothers and their children can celebrate Mother’s Day by creating a Fairy Garden on May 12 at 11 a.m. at the Austintown library that you can take home. Materials will be provided. Gathering Place event to be May 14

Lord of Life Church, located at 550 N. Broad Street in Canfield, will be the location of a Gathering Place event on May 14 at 11 a.m. There will be a speaker from Melnick Medical Museum at YSU, speaking on “Quack Medicine and the FDA.” This museum is dedicated to documenting the history of medicine, especially as it relates to the local area. Buckeye Hospice will provide free blood pressure readings at the beginning of the program, so arrive promptly at 11 a.m. Lunch will be provided by the Woodlands. This is a free community outreach social program offered to all senior citizens that is offered on the second Monday of the month every month. Mill Creek ABWA to meet on May 8

The Mill Creek Chapter of ABWA (American Business Women’s Association) will host its May 8 meeting at A La Cart Catering in Canfield beginning with networking at 6 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. The menu for the evening includes southern baked chicken, beef tips over noodles, sandtrap potatoes, peas and carrots, salad, applesauce, Jell-O and dessert. The public is welcome.

May monthly square dance announced

The Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance on May 12 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. Neil Harner will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be calling the line dances. This will be a high/low dance with alternating tips for new dancers currently taking lessons and tips for more experienced dancers. Dress is casual and light refreshments will be served. Saxon Club hosts annual flea market

The Saxon Club will start its annual flea market event on May 1 with a flea market taking place every Tuesday through October. The market starts at 8 a.m. and ends at 2 p.m., and takes place in the Saxon Club parking lot, located at 710 S. Meridian Road in Austintown. Vendors can set up before 8 a.m. if they would like. Grace Lutheran hosts Trash and Treasure sale on May 5

Grace Lutheran Church will host its Trash and Treasure sale at the church, located at 162 S. Raccoon Road on May 5 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. There are a variety of items for sale, including household goods, tools, books, clothes, collectables and other items. Lunch, baked goods and refreshments will be available. Proceeds of the sale are used by the men’s group to fund improvement or maintenance projects around the church. The entrance to the sale area is in the rear of the church.

Concert choir adds performance

The Austintown concert choir will add another performance in addition to their annual spring concert scheduled for May 5. The choir’s additional performance will take place on April 30 and will feature music the concert choir performed with Maestro Eric Whitacre at Carnegie Hall in New York: “The Music of Eric Whitacre.” The concert will take place in the Fitch Auditorium beginning at 6 p.m. This event is free and open to the public. The Fitch choir was selected to play at Carnegie Hall, under the direction of Whitacre, based on an audition tape sent previously. The choir recently performed at Carnegie.

Strawberry 5K and Fun Run to benefit food bank

On June 9, Molnar Farms is hosting an inaugural Strawberry 5K and Fun Run through the farm grounds, located at 3115 E. Western Reserve Road in Poland. Proceeds after expenses and all food donations will benefit Second Harvest Food Bank. The cost for the 5K is $30 before May 5 and $35 after that date. The Fun Run is $10. The 5K begins at 9 a.m. and the Fun Run begins at 10:30 a.m. Runners that sign up for the 5K before May 21 will receive a free race T-shirt. Basket auction fundraiser to be April 29

The Mill Creek Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association will sponsor its annual basket auction on April 29 at the Ursuline Center, located at 4280 Shields Road in Canfield. The doors open at 12:30 p.m. and the drawing will begin promptly at 3 p.m. Donations at the door will be $5, which will include a chance at the door prizes, 25 chances at the table gifts and a refreshment. Other refreshments are available. The auction benefits the education fund for the chapter. Tickets can be purchased at the door.

Austintown food service now taking bids for 2018-2019 school year

The Austintown food service department is now taking bids for the 2018-2019 school year. Bid packets for bread, dairy and pizza can be found on www.affoodservices.com. Bids must be turned into the treasurer’s office in a sealed and labeled envelope by 10 a.m. on May 4.

Local shrine club to host dinner event

The Youngstown Shrine Club will be hosting a spaghetti dinner on April 29 at the club’s main hall. Tickets are $10 for adults and dinner will be served from 11:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. The meal includes spaghetti and meatballs, salad, bread and a beverage, as well as dessert. This is a community event and the public is invited to attend. Tickets can be purchased in advance from any club officer or on the day of the event; carry-outs are also available. Celebrate Money Smart Week with fun and prizes for the whole family at the Austintown library on April 28 at 11 a.m. Picture Bingo for all ages and every child in attendance will receive a piggy bank.

Austintown Local School District announces open enrollment for 2018-2019

The Austintown Local School district will again have statewide open enrollment for the 2018-2019 school year. Applications will be accepted for students in grades Kindergarten through eighth-grade based on grade level availability. Applications are now available on the Austintown School’s website at www.austintownschools.org. In order to be accepted for open enrollment, completed applications must be submitted online. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Any students living in the state of Ohio and entering grades kindergarten through eighth are eligible. One application must be completed for each student. No new students will be accepted in grades 9-12. Only existing open enrollment students and those in special programs will be accepted into the high school. Open enrollment will close on Aug. 3 for the 2018-2019 school year. Pink Ribbon Golf Classic to be in July

The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 16. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society.
