Eastern Gateway falls to Mount Union

The Eastern Gateway baseball team lost 13-10 to Mount Union Wednesday at Eastwood Field.

Kevin Sierra Tirado hit a home run and drove in four runs for the Gators (10-11). Mark Herron went 3 for 5 with a double and two RBIs while Kyle Campbell added two hits and an RBI.

Nick Kubala suffered the loss in relief.

EGCC returns to action Friday when it hosts Mercyhurst North East in a four-game series at Austintown Fitch High School’s Rich Coppola Field.

Friday’s doubleheader begins at 11 a.m. while Saturday’s twinbill is scheduled for 2 p.m.

Speedway to start with ‘Super Series’ events

Sharon Speedway is hoping to kickoff the 89th anniversary season this Saturday with the first of 12 Menards “Super Series” events.

The Modified Tour for the Hovis Auto & Truck Supply big blocks leads the way and will be joined by the Gibson Insurance Agency Stock Cars, HTMA/Precise Racing Products RUSH Sportsman Modifieds, Summit Racing Equipment Econo Mods, and Junior Sprints for kids.

Race time is 7 p.m.

4 YSU tennis players named all-conference

The Youngstown State men’s and women’s tennis teams each had two players receive All-Horizon Leauge honors.

For the women, Noelly Longi Nsimba and Sofia Macias have been named All-Horizon League First-Team selections, the conference announced on Wednesday.

For the men, senior Danylo Veremeichuk was named first-team All-Horizon League while sophomore Joao Garretto was a second-team selection.

Nsimba went 14-8 in dual matches this spring and was 7-2 in Horizon League contests. Macias also has a 14-8 record.

Veremeichuk went 21-11 overall and Garretto is 17-14 overall.

Both teams will play in the Horizon League Championships at Purdue’s Schwartz Tennis Center in West Lafayette, Ind.. The men will play Wright State on Friday at 3 p.m. The women will defend their title on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Capitals call up former Phantom

WASHINGTON

The Washington Capitals have recalled forward Nathan Walker from their American Hockey League affiliate, the Hershey Bears.

Walker played for the Youngstown Phantoms for the last half of the 2012-13 season.

Walker was born in Wales but grew up in Australian. As a teen-ager, he began playing hockey in Europe. His time in Youngstown was his first experience in the United States.

Tonight, the Capitals begin their Stanley Cup Playoff series against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Pitt hoping to renew series with Penn State

PITTSBURGH

Pittsburgh athletic director Heather Lyke doesn’t want the 100th football game between the Panthers and Penn State to be the last.

Lyke said Wednesday that Pitt has sent the Nittany Lions a contract that would renew the series for four years starting in 2026, but has yet to hear from Penn State athletic director Sandy Barbour.

The two schools first played in 1893 and met regularly through the 2000 season. They picked it up after a layoff in 2016, and each team has won on its home field since the series picked up.

Penn State will visit Heinz Field on Sept. 8 and the Panthers will play at Beaver Stadium in September 2019, the last game in the four-game contract the two sides agreed on in 2011.

Lyke would like to keep it going, but said Pitt also can’t afford to wait too long while it tries to make long-range scheduling plans.
