Penguins sweep rare day-night doubleheader

The Youngstown State baseball team scored the first 13 runs of the game and beat Bowling Green 13-4 to complete a doubleheader sweep on Tuesday night at Eastwood Field. The Penguins (12-26) also beat Niagara 11-5 earlier in the day in a rare day-night doubleheader.

Blaze Glenn hit two home runs and went 4 for 4 with four runs scored and four RBIs in the contest. The sophomore outfielder also homered against the Purple Eagles (12-21) in game one of the doubleheader for a total of three blasts on the day. Web Charles and Nick Massey added two hits apiece, and 10 different Penguins recorded hits against Bowling Green.

Alex Bellardini earned his first win in a starting role as a Penguin, and he got his second victory this season against the Falcons. The senior right-hander blanked the Falcons over the first six innings, allowing just four hits and one walk while striking out three. He left with the Penguins ahead 11-0.

Charles gave the Penguins a 1-0 lead in the second when he singled in Glenn, and Glenn led off the fourth inning with the first of his two homers in the game. YSU scored four runs in that fourth, and Glenn also homered to start the fifth to make the score 6-0.

The Penguins then sent 10 men to the plate in the sixth as they scored five runs on four hits to blow the game open and take an 11-0 advantage. Glenn’s two-run single in the bottom of the seventh put the Penguins up 13-0.

Bowling Green (10-26) did all of its scoring with two outs in the top of the eighth inning.

Mitchum’s home run lifts Penguins over WSU

DAYTON

Sophomore Miyah Mitchum hit a two-run home run, broke up a no-hit bid and erased a 1-0 deficit in the top of the fifth and sparked YSU to a 5-2 win over Wright State on Tuesday.

With the win, the Penguins have now won five straight and improve to 20-20 overall and 10-6 in the Horizon League. Wright State falls to 14-26 overall and 8-6 in the league.

The Raiders jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the second off of YSU starter Paige Geanangel. Geanangel, who scattered seven hits with four strikeouts, picked up her 10th win over the year, including her fifth in league play.

In the top of the fifth, Kelly Thompson-Cappadocio reached on a fielding error and Mitchum followed with her first career home run, a blast down the left-field line, to give the Penguins a 2-1 edge.

YSU scored three more in the top of the seventh on a bases-loaded walk to Maddi Lusk and a two-run double to junior Lexi Zappitelli, who went 2 for 3 with two RBIs.

Shutt sisters excel in Horizon League finale

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, FLA.

Katlyn Shutt had a solid final round to finish in the top-10 while her sister Courtney Shutt capped off her Penguins career on a high note as the Horizon League Women’s Golf Championships concluded at the Las Colinas Golf Course.

Katlyn Shutt had a one-over par 74 for her final round to improve six spots in the final standings. Shutt posted a three-round total of 237 to finish in eighth place. She was in a groove posting 14 pars, two birdies, a bogey and a double bogey.

Courtney Shutt, a senior, concluded the tournament with her best round carding an 82. She played her final 10 holes at one-over par to finish her career strong. On the back nine she had six pars, two bogeys and a birdie at the par-5 14th. In the individual standings she placed 36th with a 257.

MEN’S GOLF

Scherr finishes sixth in HL tournament

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, FLA.

Freshman Kevin Scherr finished in sixth place to lead YSU at Horizon League Men’s Golf Championships at the El Campeon Golf Course.

Scherr had a three-round total of 224 that featured consistent rounds of 73, 75 and 76. In his final round 76, he had 13 pars and five bogeys. On the final nine holes he was two over par. Strong play on the back nine throughout the tournament lifted Scherr to his top-10 finish. In the three rounds he combined to go two-over par on the final nine holes. From No. 8 through 18, he was just one-over par for the event.

Junior Jason McQuown finished with a three-round total of 235 to finish 24th after a final round 77. For his third round, he had birdies at No. 1, No. 14 and No. 16.

Freshman Ken Keller posted a final round score of 77 to end his first tournament appearance on a high note.
