YSU’s Scherr is fifth in Horizon League tourney

Freshman YSU golfer Kevin Scherr resides in fifth place following the first two rounds of play at the Horizon League Championships held at the El Campeon Golf Course.

Scherr carded a second-round 75 on Monday and through two rounds has a total of 148. He is eight shots behind the leader, Northern Kentucky’s Jacob Poore. Scherr is just two strokes behind second-place golfers Oakland’s Jake Kneen and IUPUI’s Nick Bienz and one behind Cleveland State’s Anton Krecic.

In the team race, the Penguins moved up to sixth place with a team score of 314 on Monday. After two rounds, the Penguins have a team score of 625. YSU is one shot ahead of Green Bay and three in front of Detroit Mercy entering the final round tomorrow. Leading the tournament is Cleveland State with a 595.

Scherr, who had a first-round 73 on Sunday, had another strong peformance on Monday. For his round he had 10 pars, three birdies, four bogeys and one other. He birdied holes nine, 10 and 18 on his round. He played the last 11 holes at one-under par with three birdies and two bogeys.

Junior Jason McQuown is tied for 24th place with a two-round total of 158. He shot an 81 during the second that featured three birdies - No. 4, No. 10 and No. 16.

WOMEN

YSU had a second-round score of 343 on Monday. After two days of action, the Penguins are in eighth place with a 678.

Leading the tournament is IUPUI with a 619. YSU sits 11 shots behind Green Bay for seventh place.

Megan Creager carded the best score for the Penguins with an 84. Creager’s second round featured a pair of birdies and after two rounds she has a 176. Her second round was an eight-shot improvement following her first-day score.

The top golfer on the leaderboard for the Prnguins is sophomore Katlyn Shutt, who was tied for the lead following the first round. She fired an 87 on Monday and has two-round total of 163. She sits in 14th place. On Monday, she had seven pars and birdies at No. 9 and No. 10.

Tori Utrup had YSU’s second-best score in the second round with an 85. She had birdies at No. 12 and No. 13 on Monday and was just three-over on the back nine. For the tournament she has a two-round score of 169 and is tied for 23rd.
