Cuyahoga CC sweeps Eastern Gateway

The Eastern Gateway Gators dropped a three-game series to Cuyahoga Community College over the weekend.

Sunday, the Gators (10-10) dropped a doubleheader, 4-0 and 11-2 at Ron Mottl Field. Saturday, the Gators lost, 8-1.

In Sunday’s first game, Dylan Kurcon and Mark Herron each doubled as the Gators were limited to four hits.

In the second game, Kevin Sierra Tirado had three hits and drove in a run.

In Satuirday’s game, Doug Painter led the offense with two hits. Herron doubled and Kyle Campbell drove in the run.

Mooney’s DeSantis signs with Chicago St.

Cardinal Mooney High School senior volleyball player Autumn DeSantis has signed a letter of intent to play with Division I Chicago State. DeSantis has a full athletic scholarship.

DeSantis earned four varsity letters for the Cardinals and was a captain for three seasons.

She recorded more than 1,000 kills garnered 1st Team All District and All State honors.

DeSantis also is a high jumper and qaulified for the state finals last June in Columbus.

She has a 4.1 grade-point average, is an honors student and will study Early Childhood and Special Education.

Poland High School senior soccer player Alexis DeMain will continue her athletic career at Wheeling Jesuit University.

Former MLB All-Star Davey Nelson, 73, dies

MILWAUKEE

Davey Nelson, a Milwaukee Brewers broadcaster and former All-Star infielder who also coached in the majors, has died. He was 73.

The Brewers say Nelson died Monday after a long illness.

Nelson joined the Brewers as a roving minor league instructor in 2001 before joining the big league team as first base coach two years later. He became an analyst with Fox Sports Wisconsin in 2006 and took a front-office role with the Brewers organization.

Nelson also had coaching stints with the White Sox, Athletics, Indians and the Expos.

He played in the majors from 1968-77 as an infielder with the Indians, Senators, Rangers and Royals. Nelson made the 1973 AL All-Star team after batting .286 with 43 stolen bases with Texas.

49ers: Foster will be cut if proven he hit woman

SANTA CLARA, Calif.

San Francisco general manager John Lynch says the team will be patient through linebacker Reuben Foster’s legal issues in a domestic violence case but stressed he won’t remain on the 49ers if the team determines he hit a woman.

Lynch spoke publicly Monday for the first time since Foster was charged with felony domestic violence on April 12 after being accused by authorities of dragging his girlfriend and punching her in the head, leaving her with a ruptured eardrum.

The 49ers announced a few days later that Foster would not take part in the offseason program while he deals with the legal matter. Lynch said the team wants to get more information about the case before making a final decision on Foster’s status.

Farquhar ‘progressing well’ after surgery

CHICAGO

White Sox reliever Danny Farquhar is talking to his doctors and family after surgery over the weekend to address a ruptured aneurysm that occurred during Friday night’s game against Houston.

Farquhar remains in critical but stable condition in the intensive care unit at Rush University Medical Center. The team announced Monday the 31-year-old right-hander is expected to remain hospitalized.

Additional testing revealed a brain hemorrhage caused by a ruptured aneurysm. He had surgery Saturday to address the aneurysm, and the team reported he was “progressing well.”
