SOCIETY DIGEST || Afterschool academies to offer culinary event


MERCER, PA

The STEAM Afterschool Academies of eight school districts, participating in the 21st Century Community Learning Centers, will showcase culinary talents from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Mercer County Career Center, 776 Greenville Road. Each afterschool program will offer samples of original and family recipes for attendees to taste. Themes include “Around the World with Taste” offering international delights and “Reaching for the Stars” recipes. Interactive “kitchen science” demonstrations will offer activities for families. A Blue Ribbon panel of judges will select winners in each of the categories. The participating schools include Greenville, Reynolds, Keystone Charter, Sharpsville, Hermitage, West Middlesex, Mercer and Commodore Perry. The event is free. ABWA will host basket auction Sunday

CANFIELD

The Mill Creek Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association will sponsor its annual basket auction Sunday at the Ursuline Center, 4280 Shields Road. Doors open at 12:30 p.m. and the drawing will take place at 3. Donations at the door will be $5 and includes a chance at the door prizes, 25 chances at the table gifts and a refreshment. Other refreshments also will be available. Proceeds benefit the education fund for the chapter. Tickets may be purchased at the door.

Library to offer educational program

SALEM

A Go Wild in the Park series program hosted by Salem Parks and Recreation Department and Salem Public Library will take place at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Quaker Room, 821 E. State St. The talk will be “Wild Mushrooms: a World of Wonder at Out Feet” and the guest speaker will be Walt Sturgeon.

The Go Wild in the Park series provides two educational programs per month. Programs are made available to the public through the partnership of Salem Public Library and Salem Parks and Recreation Department.

CCCTC will host Recruitment Fair

LISBON

The Columbiana County Career and Technical Center will host an Apprentice Recruitment Fair from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at 9364 state Route 45. All companies at the event are seeking candidated for full-time employment and entry into apprenticeship training programs.

Current high school seniors interested in a career in manufacturing are invited to meet and interview from 4 to 5 p.m. during the event. Adults are invited to meet and interview from 5 to 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Resumes are suggested, but not required. Library to host new program

SALEM

Salem Public Library, 821 E. State St., will host “Hurricanes: Predicting Disaster” at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the library’s Quaker Meeting Room. The program will take place via video-conferencing from Mariners’ Museum of Newport News, Va., and will help participants explore the difference between hurricanes, typhoons and cyclones.
