YSU’s Shutt tied for first in HL tourney

YSU’s Scherr is in second place in the men’s competition

Defending Horizon League champion Katlyn Shutt is tied for first place in the 2018 Horizon League Championships following an opening-round 76 on Sunday on Las Colinas Golf Course.

Shutt, who won last year’s title as a freshman, is tied with Oakland’s Kylee Sullivan. Just a stroke are UIC’s Kelly Sterling, Oakland’s Fiona Schmidt and Detroit Mercy’s Shana Murphy.

In the team standings following first the day, the Penguins are in seventh place with a score of 335. However, YSU is just five shots out of third place. IUPUI leads with 317 while Oakland (320) is second and UIC (330) third.

Shutt’s round was highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 14th hole. The eagle allowed her to play the last five holes at 3-under par, which also included a birdie at the 15th. Shutt played the final 10 holes at one-under par and had a 37 on the back nine after a front side four-over par 43. Additionally she had a birdie on No. 6.

In her Horizon League Championships debut, freshman Tori Utrup had a solid opening round of 84. Utrup’s round featured birdies at No. 5 and No. 16 and six pars. She is tied for 18th place.

Freshman Kara Raines carded an first-round 87 and is tied for 28th place. Raines had seven pars and a birdie at the seventh.

Senior Courtney Shutt is tied for 32nd after a first-round 88 and Megan Creager is 39th after shooting a 92. Both golfers birdied the par-4 fourth hole during their rounds.

The Penguins’ second round today is set to begin at 7:30 a.m.

YSU freshman men’s golfer Kevin Scherr is in second place after a first-round 73 in the men’s Horizon League Championships at El Campeon Golf Course.

Scherr, IUPUI’s Nick Bienz and Wright State’s Chris Rossi and Bryce Haney sit in second four strokes behind Northern Kentucky’s Jacob Poore who had a 2-under par 69 on Sunday.

In the team standings, the Penguins are seventh following a first-round 311. They are just eight strokes back of second- place Cleveland State as teams two through eight are separated by just eight shots. Wright State has the first-round lead following a 297.

In his Horizon League Championships debut, Scherr carded a 2-over par round that featured 11 pars, three birdies, three bogeys and just one double bogey. He had birdies on No. 2, No. 8 and 17. He played the back nine even par (36) and was one-under his final 11 holes. He had a string of six straight birdies from holes 11 through 16.

Junior Jason McQuown carded a 77 and is tied for 15th place. McQuown had an ever-par 36 on the final holes after shooting a 41 on the front side. In his final 10 holes, he was 1-under par and had just 39 shots after having 38 his first eight. He had birdies at No. 9 and No. 16 to go along with 10 pars for the round.

Freshman Ken Keller also finished strong to score a 79 and is tied for 23rd place. Keller also carded a 36 on the back nine with seven pars, a birdie and a bogey. He was 1-under par for his final 10 holes and had 39 strokes during that time after having a 40 through eight holes.

Senior Justin Hallapy is tied for 34th place after a first-round 82. After a rocky start with 17 shots through three holes, he settled in to go two over par on the remainder of the front nine. On the back nine he had four pars, three bogeys, a birdie and a double bogey. He ended his round with a birdie at No. 18.

Freshman C.J. Hughes is tied for 38th following an opening 86. Hughes had seven pars and a birdie at No. 8 to highlight his round.

The second round begins today with YSU teeing off at 7:30 a.m. The Penguins will be paired with Detroit Mercy.
