Jeff Kelly to speak at Curbstone luncheon

Youngstown State University football and basketball public address announcer Jeff Kelly is scheduled as the guest speaker at Monday’s luncheon meeting of The Curbstone Coaches at the Avion Banquet Center.

The event begins at noon and the public is welcome to attend.

Also, plans are under way for the 51st Curbstone Coaches Hall of Fame induction ceremony which is set for May 6 at Mr. Anthony’s in Boardman. The keynote speaker will be former YSU and NFL kicker Paul McFadden.

Packard Ladies Golf League starts 59th year

The Packard Electric Ladies Golf League is conducting registration for the season April 28th at Tamer Win Golf Course from 11:00 am to noon.

Golfers do not have to be Delphi, Packard Electric or General Motors employees or retirees to join.

The league consists of two divisions that play on Mondays at Tamer Win Golf Course. The par three division tee times are 9:44 - 10:08 am. The regular division tee times are 3:12 - 3:52 pm, and for the working ladies 5:12 - 5:36 pm. League structure is individual play. Tee times may be adjusted according to total membership.

The cost to join one division is $26.00 or $28.00 to join both divisions. Members must provide their name, address, phone number and provide or establish a handicap prior to the start of scheduled league. The league starts May 14th.

Amnesty International honors Kaepernick

AMSTERDAM

Human rights organization Amnesty International has given former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick its Ambassador of Conscience Award for his kneeling protest of racial injustice that launched a movement and might have cost him his job.

The former San Francisco 49ers star was presented the award at a ceremony in Amsterdam on Saturday by onetime teammate Eric Reid.

Kaepernick first took a knee during the pre-game playing of the American national anthem when he was with the 49ers in 2016 to protest police brutality.

Other players joined him, drawing the ire of President Donald Trump, who called for team owners to fire such players.

Kaepernick wasn’t signed for the 2017 season following his release from San Francisco.

He said he shares the Amnesty honor “with all of the countless people throughout the world combating the human rights violations of police officers.”

Popovich won’t coach Spurs in Game 4

SAN ANTONIO

Gregg Popovich won’t coach the San Antonio Spurs in their possible series finale against the Golden State Warriors as he grieves the death of his wife.

Spurs assistant Ettore Messina coached San Antonio in Game 3 and will again today.

Erin Popovich passed away Wednesday from a long-term illness.

Winslow fined for stepping on facemask

NEW YORK

Miami’s Justise Winslow has been fined $15,000 by the NBA for attempting to damage Philadelphia center Joel Embiid’s facemask during Game 3 of their playoff series.

Winslow intentionally stepped on Embiid’s mask after it had fallen onto the court with 7:51 remaining in the second quarter of the 76ers’ 128-108 victory on Thursday night.

The NBA cited Winslow for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Embiid was wearing the mask for the first time after returning from a 10-game absence caused by a broken orbital bone.
