Newcomers club to meet on April 25
Newcomers of Mahoning Valley will meet on April 25 at Das Dutch House Restaurant, located at 1485 South Ave in Columbiana. Lunch will be at noon and after a brief business meeting, members will be free to shop at the various stores in the complex. Hostesses are Donna Beule and Sally Rose. New members are always welcome. The Next Step Group begins meetings in Canfield
A 12-step group to help people break the bonds of codependency will begin meeting at the Ursuline Center on April 30. The Next Step Group will follow the same format and philosophy of other 12 step groups. Codependency creates an imbalance where people put others’ needs before their own. The meetings will help attendees find ways to move beyond codependency and focus on gratitude, find awareness of inner guidance, create personal desires using the law of attraction, celebrate accomplishments and growth, acknowledge personal strengths and learn the healthy way to serve your brothers, sisters and self. Meetings will be Monday evenings beginning on April 30 from 7-8 p.m. at the Ursuline Center. There is no charge to join this group, which preserves anonymity, but a goodwill offering of $1 per meeting would be appreciated to cover the cost of coffee, etc. The Ursuline Center is located at 4280 Shields Road in Canfield and is a ministry of the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown. Fruit tree pruning clinic hosted at Mahoning County Extension
Learn how to prune apple and peach trees with Mahoning County OSU Extension and White House Fruit Farms. The program will take place on April 21 from 1-3:30 p.m. at White House Fruit Farms, located at 9249 Youngstown-Salem Road in Canfield. This event will take place rain or shine, so warm dress and rugged shoes or boots are recommended. Registration for the program is $20 per person, which includes a set of hand pruners and handouts. Pruning is important to the success of fruit trees, and knowing how to properly prune can aid in the success of future crops. Demonstrations will be done by Eric Barrett, OSU Extension Educator, and Dave and David Hull from White House Fruit Farms. Nominations open for awards ceremony
In celebration of National Emergency Medical Service (EMS) week, Steward Health Care System will host its First National “EMS Stewards of the Community” Awards Ceremony on May 24 at The Squaw Creek Country Club. Steward, which operates four local hospitals, including Sharon Regional Medical Center, Trumbull Regional Medical Center, Northside Regional Medical Center and Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital, will recognize several Emergency Medical Services (EMS) providers for going “above and beyond” in their interactions with patients at each of Steward’s community hospitals. To nominate an EMS provider in your community for an “EMS Stewards of the Community” award, visit http://info.steward.org/emsaward2018-OHPA.html. Nominations must be received by April 27. The “EMS Stewards of the Community” awards show appreciation for emergency medical responders and dispatchers, emergency medical technicians, advanced emergency medical technicians and paramedics who not only carry out the noble work of caring for others, but do so with a high degree of expertise, professionalism and compassion. An internal committee of physicians, nurses and EMS Managers will review nominations and select recipients for each of the Steward hospitals.
Strawberry 5K and Fun Run to benefit food bank
On June 9, Molnar Farms is hosting an inaugural Strawberry 5K and Fun Run through the farm grounds, located at 3115 E. Western Reserve Road in Poland. Proceeds after expenses and all food donations will benefit Second Harvest Food Bank. The cost for the 5K is $30 before May 5 and $35 after that date. The Fun Run is $10. The 5K begins at 9 a.m. and the Fun Run begins at 10:30 a.m. Runners that sign up for the 5K before May 21 will receive a free race T-shirt. Basket auction fundraiser to be April 29
The Mill Creek Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association will sponsor its annual basket auction on April 29 at the Ursuline Center, located at 4280 Shields Road in Canfield. The doors open at 12:30 p.m. and the drawing will begin promptly at 3 p.m. Donations at the door will be $5, which will include a chance at the door prizes, 25 chances at the table gifts and a refreshment. Other refreshments are available. The auction benefits the education fund for the chapter. Tickets can be purchased at the door.
Audubon Society presents mini documentary
Audubon Society/Mahoning Valley invites the public to “America’s Other Audubon” at 7 p.m. on April 23 at the Canfield library. Inspired by seeing some of John James Audubon’s engravings for “Birds of America at the 1876 World’s Fair in Philadelphia,” 29-year-old amateur naturalist Genevieve Estelle Jones embarked on her own project, “Illustrations of the Nests and Eggs of Birds of Ohio.” When she died suddenly of typhoid fever, her family decided to finish her work; a labor of love that took seven years. Joy M. Kiser, an Ohioan and former librarian for the Cleveland Museum of Natural History and the National Endowment for the Arts in Washington, D.C., will present a mini documentary on Kiser, which will include details about the family, archival photographs and other information not included in her book, America’s Other Audubon.
Fiesta De Las Americas to be April 26
The Ursuline High School Spanish Club is hosting its annual Fiesta De Las Americas event on April 26 from 6-8 p.m. at the Ursuline High School cafeteria. The event will feature performances by the Slippery Rock University Ballet, the Labra Brothers Band and more. The cost to attend is $2 for students and $5 for adults.
Local church hosts fundraising event
Canfield Presbyterian Church will be hosting its annual Trash & Treasure Sale on April 28 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Admittance to the sale is free and open to the public. It will feature slightly-used and reasonably-priced furniture, household goods, books, toys, baby items, electronics and sporting equipment, as well as jewelry, collectibles and antiques. All proceeds will benefit the church’s 2018 International Mission Team, which is traveling to the Dominican Republic and Haiti in July. Donations for the sale are also being accepted weekdays at the church between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. until April 23. No clothing, shoes, old computers or non-flat screen TVs will be accepted. The church is located at 140 W. Main St. in Canfield.
Ukulele group to meet
There will be another Steel Valley Ukers meeting at the Austintown library on April 21 from 3-5 p.m. The group is a non-profit, and there is no fee to attend any of their meetings. The group plays ukuleles and is open to people of all ages and skill levels.
Local shrine club to host dinner event
The Youngstown Shrine Club will be hosting a spaghetti dinner on April 29 at the club’s main hall. Tickets are $10 for adults and dinner will be served from 11:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. The meal includes spaghetti and meatballs, salad, bread and a beverage, as well as dessert. This is a community event and the public is invited to attend. Tickets can be purchased in advance from any club officer or on the day of the event; carry-outs are also available. Guided labyrinth walk season begins at The Ursuline Health and Wellness Center
The Ursuline Health and Wellness Center, located at 4280 Shields Road, begins its 2018 Guided Labyrinth Walk season with a walk on April 15 at 2 p.m. This year’s themes celebrate aspects of St. Angela Merici’s introduction to her Counsels. St. Angela founded the Ursuline order in 1535. All persons of faith are invited to participate in these free events. Walks generally take 20 minutes to half an hour. All walks are scheduled weather-permitting. The list of walks is: May 17 at 6:30 p.m. - “Get Moving,” June 21 at 6:30 p.m. - “Be Confident,” July 19 at 6:30 p.m. - “Risk New Things,” Aug. 16 at 6:30 p.m. - “Stick with It,” Sept. 20 at 6:30 p.m. - “Get on Your Knees” and Oct. 14 at 2 p.m. - “Expect Big Surprises.” The Ursuline Center Labyrinth is a ministry of the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown and open year-round from dawn to dusk for all persons of faith. There is no cost to use the labyrinth, which is handicapped-accessible and offers ample parking. Printed guides are provided at the Labyrinth’s entrance giving suggestions for following the path, but there is no right or wrong way to experience the sacred walk.
Dunkin’ Donuts helps feed local families
Now through April 30, Dunkin’ Donuts in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties will be selling icons for a $1 donation to Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley. With every icon purchased, the customer receives a $1 off coupon for a pound of coffee. For every $1 given, the Food Bank can distribute $11 worth of food to hungry families in our community. Last year, Dunkin’ Donut locations in the Mahoning Valley raised more than $21,000 to feed local families. The campaign is a collaborative effort of four food banks, including Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley, the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank and Second Harvest Food Bank of North Central Ohio. All funds raised will remain in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties to feed our friends and neighbors. Canfield bank wins national award
Raymond James, one of America’s top financial services institutions, selected Farmers National Banc Corp. of Canfield, the parent company of Farmers National Bank, to receive its coveted 2017 Raymond James Community Bankers Cup. The Bankers Cup is an extremely competitive award. In making its determination, Raymond James scrutinized every exchange-traded bank in America with assets between $500 million and $10 billion. Of the 272 banks nationwide that qualified, 28 demonstrated the superior financial performance and stability to be named Bankers Cup winners. The Raymond James Community Bankers Cup awards are an annual event now in its sixth year. This is the first year Farmers National Banc Corp. has won.

Join the Canfield library every Wednesday at 10 a.m. and again at 11:30 a.m. for “Gotta Move Story Time.” This program is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a caregiver. Join them for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months at the Canfield library every Thursday in April at 10 a.m. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.
Pink Ribbon Golf Classic to be in July
The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 16. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. The Mahoning Valley Corvettes joins in with Salem car cruise for event
The call to take over The Salem Super cruise, Salem’s largest annual event attracting thousands, was recently answered by The Mahoning Valley Corvettes. The non-profit car club dates back to 1962 including members from every surrounding community and Salem. Many of the club members have enjoyed the Salem Super Cruise and will now partner with the City of Salem to put on the event entering its 14th year. The Salem Super Cruise is open to all cars and trucks, not just Corvettes. Motorcycles are also welcome. The weekend benefits the Second Harvest Foodbank, which feeds many hungry local families. The event will take place June 7-10 and will feature activities, some free, including a parade, car show, food, live bands and more. The Mahoning Valley Corvettes look forward to partnering with the City of Salem to provide a this weekend for the entire family.

GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg).
