Newcomers club to meet on April 25

Newcomers of Mahoning Valley will meet on April 25 at Das Dutch House Restaurant, located at 1485 South Ave in Columbiana. Lunch will be at noon and after a brief business meeting, members will be free to shop at the various stores in the complex. Hostesses are Donna Beule and Sally Rose. New members are always welcome. Local church hosts fundraising sale

The Boardman United Methodist Church, located at 6809 Market Street in Boardman, is hosting its spring trash and treasure sale event on May 2 and 3 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Thursday is bargain-bag day.

JCRC announces winners of annual Student Holocaust Writing and Art Contest

As part of its 25th annual Community Holocaust Commemoration for Yom Hashoah (Holocaust Remembrance), the Jewish Community Relations Council of the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation announced the winners of its Student Holocaust Writing and Art Contest. Students in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana Counties and Western Pennsylvania from grades 7-12 were invited to submit an original piece of poetry, narrative composition, art or media. Winners from Boardman are (poetry, grades 9–10) Sehar Khan (winner), (poetry grades, 11–12) Cole Christman (winner), (essays, grades 11–12) Siena Larrick, (winner), (art, grades 9–10) Alayna Cuevas (winner) and Lexis Bradley (second place).

Akron Children’s Hospital now offers adolescent medicine services in Boardman.

Adolescent Medicine Specialist Dr. James Fitzgibbon has begun seeing patients at Akron Children’s Hospital Beeghly Campus, located at 6505 Market Street, Building C. He is available for patients, ages 9-24, on the first and third Wednesday afternoons of every month. Akron Children’s Department of Adolescent Medicine is specially trained in caring for the range of medical, social, emotional, sexual, educational and nutritional concerns that are common in preteens and teens. Their care focuses on respecting individuality, supporting physical and emotional growth and development, and educating and empowering patients to ultimately take ownership of their healthcare. April Bunny Showers open house to begin April 21

The April Bunny Showers open house will take place on April 21 and 22 from 12-4 p.m. Meet adoptable bunnies from F5RS, a 501c3 rescue and sanctuary, and more. You can also learn about Bunnies in Baskets therapy bunnies. On-site adoptions are possible with approved applications, which can be found at orgsites.com/oh/F5RS. The located in 11836 South Ave. in the Old School Marketplace, building E in the basement. Elevator access is available.

Strawberry 5K and Fun Run to benefit food bank

On June 9, Molnar Farms is hosting an inaugural Strawberry 5K and Fun Run through the farm grounds, located at 3115 E. Western Reserve Road in Poland. Proceeds after expenses and all food donations will benefit Second Harvest Food Bank. The cost for the 5K is $30 before May 5 and $35 after that date. The Fun Run is $10. The 5K begins at 9 a.m. and the Fun Run begins at 10:30 a.m. Runners that sign up for the 5K before May 21 will receive a free race T-shirt. Students perform spring concert

The fifth-, sixth- and seventh-grade bands at the Boardman Middle Schools will present a spring band concert on May 31 at 7 p.m. in the Boardman High School Performing Arts Center. Admission/donations accepted at the door: adults - $3, students - $2 and senior citizens are admitted free of charge.

Basket auction fundraiser to be April 29

The Mill Creek Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association will sponsor its annual basket auction on April 29 at the Ursuline Center, located at 4280 Shields Road in Canfield. The doors open at 12:30 p.m. and the drawing will begin promptly at 3 p.m. Donations at the door will be $5, which will include a chance at the door prizes, 25 chances at the table gifts and a refreshment. Other refreshments are available. The auction benefits the education fund for the chapter. Tickets can be purchased at the door.

Audubon Society presents mini documentary

Audubon Society/Mahoning Valley invites the public to “America’s Other Audubon” at 7 p.m. on April 23 at the Canfield library. Inspired by seeing some of John James Audubon’s engravings for “Birds of America at the 1876 World’s Fair in Philadelphia,” 29-year-old amateur naturalist Genevieve Estelle Jones embarked on her own project, “Illustrations of the Nests and Eggs of Birds of Ohio.” When she died suddenly of typhoid fever, her family decided to finish her work; a labor of love that took seven years. Joy M. Kiser, an Ohioan and former librarian for the Cleveland Museum of Natural History and the National Endowment for the Arts in Washington, D.C., will present a mini documentary on Kiser, which will include details about the family, archival photographs and other information not included in her book, America’s Other Audubon.

Fiesta De Las Americas to be April 26

The Ursuline High School Spanish Club is hosting its annual Fiesta De Las Americas event on April 26 from 6-8 p.m. at the Ursuline High School cafeteria. The event will feature performances by the Slippery Rock University Ballet, the Labra Brothers Band and more. The cost to attend is $2 for students and $5 for adults.

Ukulele group to meet

There will be another Steel Valley Ukers meeting at the Austintown library on April 21 from 3-5 p.m. The group is a non-profit, and there is no fee to attend any of their meetings. The group plays ukuleles and is open to people of all ages and skill levels.

Local shrine club to host dinner event

The Youngstown Shrine Club will be hosting a spaghetti dinner on April 29 at the club’s main hall. Tickets are $10 for adults and dinner will be served from 11:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. The meal includes spaghetti and meatballs, salad, bread and a beverage, as well as dessert. This is a community event and the public is invited to attend. Tickets can be purchased in advance from any club officer or on the day of the event; carry-outs are also available. Pruning clinic offered at the Boardman Park

There will be a hands-on pruning clinic at the historic Smith Family Homestead, located at 8270 Raupp Ave. in Boardman, which is off of Washington Boulevard, on April 25 from 1-3 p.m. The clinic is sponsored by the Ohio State Extension Service, Boardman Park and the Mahoning Valley Landscape and Nursery Association. Participants will learn to prune for maximum flower potential, disease reduction, regeneration and shape. Additionally, proper pruning techniques and tools will be discussed. There will be hands-on training and participants are encouraged to dress for the weather and bring a lawn chair if needed. Pre-registration is required. Dunkin’ Donuts helps feed local families

Now through April 30, Dunkin’ Donuts in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties will be selling icons for a $1 donation to Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley. With every icon purchased, the customer receives a $1 off coupon for a pound of coffee. For every $1 given, the Food Bank can distribute $11 worth of food to hungry families in our community. Last year, Dunkin’ Donut locations in the Mahoning Valley raised more than $21,000 to feed local families. The campaign is a collaborative effort of four food banks, including Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley, the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank and Second Harvest Food Bank of North Central Ohio. All funds raised will remain in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties to feed our friends and neighbors. Blood drive to be at the library

Join game night for adults

Play the hand you’re dealt of cards (Rummy), dice (Farkle) and Scrabble at the Boardman library on April 26 at 7 p.m. Bring a friend or two and join them on the fourth Thursday of the month for snacks and bragging rights in this one hour program for adults.

Business workshop presented at the library

This workshop provides the basics to understand every section of a business plan through resources of the library. Smart money story time at the library

Celebrate Money Smart Week with stories, games and a craft at the Boardman library April 25 at 10 a.m. This program is for children of all ages and allowed only one bank per child who is attending the program. Children under the age of 7 must be accompanied by an adult.

Boardman Park’s community garden to start planting

While it may still be too early for digging and planting it’s not too early to join the community garden and start planning what fresh vegetables will be on your dinner table this summer. Whether you have a green thumb and are an experienced gardener or whether you are a beginner, community gardens allow you to experience the joys of gardening, promote healthy eating habits and build new relationships with others in the community. The garden is located at the Historic Southern Stables on Washington Boulevard. Registration for the 10 feet by 20 feet garden plots begins on April 2 at the Boardman Park Office, located at 375 Boardman-Poland Road, and are available for a fee of $25. Your fee includes the garden plot, water and periodic classes/instructions on gardening. Due to the limited number of plots available, registration is limited to Boardman residents only. Park to host day camp during summer

Boardman Park’s Adventure Day Camp will soon begin. The goal of the camp is to offer young minds the opportunity to explore their imaginations, discover physical fitness, expand their knowledge of sports and develop a growing sense of adventure through diverse activities. The curriculum is designed to be age appropriate, educational and fun as the children participate in a daily schedule of arts and crafts, team building, creative arts, science and sports. Adventure Day Camp will run for 10 weeks, starting on June 11 and running through Aug. 17. The Camp hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. for children who have completed kindergarten through sixth grade. Arrangements can be made if you need to bring campers early or pick them up later for an additional charge. Registration begins on April 2. Westminster Presbyterian Church offers used book sale

Just as April brings us the promise of May flowers, it is also the month of the annual Westminster Presbyterian Church Used Book Sale. For the 62nd consecutive year, thousands of books will be available to purchase. Categories of books include fiction, non fiction, sports, hobbies and religion, cookbooks, an especially a large section devoted to children’s books for all ages as well as video games, music CDs, vinyl, DVDs and puzzles. This year’s sale will take place on April 25 from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. and April 26 and 27 from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. On April 26, all paperbacks are 25 cents. On the 27th until 4 p.m., all books are half price. After 4 p.m. on the 27th, books are sold for $1 for a grocery bag, provided by the sale. Tales and Talk for 2’s and 3’s announced for April

Join the Boardman library every Wednesday at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.

Bonding with babies and books

This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months at the Boardman library every Tuesday in April at 10 a.m. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.

Pink Ribbon Golf Classic to be in July

The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 16. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. GA to meet twice this week

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg).
