The Boardman boys track team opened its 2018 regular season with a 106-24-17 victory over the Ursuline Fighting Irish and Canfield Cardinals on April 3 at Spartan Stadium.
The Spartans opened the meet with a victory by senior David Bader, junior Payton Torres, sophomore Alan Cuevas and freshman Cristian Ortiz in the 4x800 meter relay. The next event, the 110-meter hurdles, the Spartans took two of the four places with sophomore Brian Yauger second and sophomore Jaret Foulke in fourth. In the 100-meter dash, junior Josh Rodriguez was first, sophomore Isaiah Suarez took second and senior JaJuan Forte was third. The next event on the track was the first ever seated 100 in Spartan track history with freshman Micah Beckwith placing first.
The 4x200 relay team of seniors Justice Jama, Billy Cammack, and JaJuan Forte along with freshman Brennon Stratton placed first. In the 1600-meter run, sophomore Mitchel Dunham placed first, freshman Frank Bero was second, freshman Caydin Newberry was third and freshman Justin Maloney was fourth. The 4x100 relay team of Jama, Rodriguez, Forte and sophomore Rashie Garner placed first. Senior Jason Fabian placed second in the 400-meter run, he was followed by Torres in third and Stratton fourth. In the 300-meter hurdles Yauger was first and sophomore Manfred Kastiga was third. In the 800-meter run, Torres was second and Bader was third. The 200-meter dash was won by Jama with Suarez in second.
In the field events, the Spartans swept the high jump with Jama first, Yauger second, Cammack placed third and freshman Aiden Glatz was fourth. In the discus, senior Steven Amstutz took second with junior Nikitas Missos in fourth, while in the shot put Amstutz took first, sophomore Dave Merdich was second and Missos was fourth. Finally, in the pole vault, senior Mark Moradian was first, senior Jacob Kimble second, freshman Teddy Anzevino was third and freshman Sam Cammack was fourth.
Due to weather, the long jump, 3200, and 4x4 relay were not contested.
“Our kids were chomping at the bit to get out there and compete,” said Boardman Head Coach John Phillips. “We were unable to run last week due to weather and even though tonight wasn’t paradise, we were able to get most of the events in before the storms hit.”
