The Austintown Council of PTA invited the community to the Fitch cafeteria on March 20 for the 10th annual Souper Supper event.
All of the money raised during the night went toward the families in need at Austintown schools. Attendees paid either $7 for a meal and bowl, $5 for a bowl or $5 for just a meal. The groups received help from the art departments at the intermediate and high schools.
“I’m glad to be a part of this awesome event for the community,“ said Diane Devine, Fitch’s ceramics teacher. She and her students helped make the bowls for the event. They had help from the fifth-grade art students and former Austintown art teacher Natalie Winkle, who continues to volunteer for the event despite working at Boardman local schools now.
The Council of PTA includes the members of Austintown’s elementary, intermediate and middle schools and Fitch’s PTSA. Representatives from each PTA helped pass out food and run the supper.
Attendees received a small meal to reflect on the small meals those struggling often have to eat. They had their choice of chicken noodle, vegetable, potato or minestrone soups, a cookie, bun and a drink.
Each table had a placard on it that listed statistics of hunger rates in the nation and in the area. They also had quotes from people like John F. Kennedy written on them talking about charity and helping the less fortunate.
The program a basket raffle and 50/50 raffle. They also had a performance by the Austintown Middle School’s Falcon Chorale, a choir group of seventh and eighth grade students led by music teacher Megan Keown.
