Herbstreit to speak at United Way event

ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit will be the guest speaker for the United Way of Youngstown’s 13th Annual Champions Among Us. The event takes place on May 17 at The Lake Club in Poland. All proceeds go to the United Way’s education programs and initiatives.

Kane-Johnson transferring to YSU

YOUNGSTOWN

Niles native Cameron Kane-Johnson will join Youngstown State’s men’s basketball team, the player announced via Twitter on Tuesday.

Kane-Johnson spent the past two seasons at Division III Westminster College, where he was the Titans’ leading scorer. He averaged 15.7 points as the Titans went 19-9.

Struthers hires Neider as girls coach

STRUTHERS

Struthers High School has hired former assistant coach Bill Neider to be its new girls basketball coach. He replaces John Grandy, who retired this year after winning 224 games with the Wildcats. Neider was an assistant under Grandy.

Sharon Speedway opens Friday

The 89th anniversary season at Sharon Speedway is set to begin Friday with the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series’ second appearance.

The HTMA/Precise Racing Products RUSH Sportsman Modifieds also will be on the card with warm-ups slated to begin at 6:15 p.m.

The LOLMDS boasts a star-studded lineup of racers that will be in competition battling in the $12,000 to-win “Steel Valley 50.”

Mercer native wins bowling tournament

Bucky Buchanan, a Mercer, Pa., native, took top honors in the 17th Annual Mickey Michalojko Memorial Scratch Bowling Tournament that matched 100 of the best bowlers from four states competing for a guaranteed first prize of over $2,000.

Buchanan captured the title by averaging 219 for the four games of qualification. Runner-up Sam DeWitt of Pittsburgh left a solid, ringing 10-pin in the ninth frame that would have given him the lead.

Prison Fellowship sets 5K run/walk

Phantoms sign Schoen to USHL tender

YOUNGSTOWN

The Youngstown Phantoms signed 2002-born forward Ben Schoen to a USHL tender. Schoen, a native of Maumee near Toledo, is Youngstown’s first and only tender signing so far prior to the USHL Phase I Draft on May 7.

Schoen is a high school freshman and spent this past season as part of the very successful Detroit Little Caesars U15 AAA program. In 67 games this season with Little Caesars, Schoen produced 78 points (37G – 41A) to go along with 75 penalty minutes.

Dee Haslam steps down as media CEO

CLEVELAND

Browns owner Dee Haslam is stepping down as the CEO of her media company to focus more on the NFL franchise and community work in Cleveland.

RIVR Media, which is based in Knoxville, Tennessee, and co-founded by Haslam, announced that Rob Lundgren will become CEO.

Haslam intends to stay on as a partner and executive producer for the company, which has produced more than 3,000 episodes for 21 different networks. RIVR is credited with the cable hit “Trading Spaces,” and other shows.
