A super day for DC’s Action Comics

Action Comics – the comic book that introduced Superman in 1938, launching the superhero genre – today became the first comic title to hit 1,000 issues.

To celebrate, DC Comics released the issue with eight different covers. It features a new Superman costume that integrates classic and new elements, including the return of the Man of Steel’s trademark red trunks.

“Action Comics No. 1,000 represents a watershed moment in the history of not just comic books, but entertainment, literature and pop culture,” said DC publisher Jim Lee, who is also the artist who designed the new costume. “There’s no better way to celebrate Superman’s enduring popularity than to give him a look that combines some new accents with the most iconic feature of his classic design.”

Superman was created by Cleveland natives Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster in 1933.

Greg Bartholomew, owner of All American Cards and Comics shops in Warren and Boardman, was expecting high demand and ordered more than 100 copies for each store, with all eight covers represented.

“This is the biggest Superman title since they killed him off in 1992,” said Bartholomew, who noted that the original Batman comic book will publish its 1,000th issue next year.

Bartholomew is marking anniversaries of his own this year – the 25th for the Warren store and the 20th for the Boardman store.
