Maine community creates ice carousel on frozen lake

SINCLAIR, Maine

Residents in a Maine town believe they’ve created the world’s largest ice carousel on a frozen lake.

About 100 volunteers cut a circle in the ice that’s 427 feet in diameter, and they used four outboard boat motors to get it rotating April 7. It happened in Sinclair in northern Maine.

Mike Cyr, one of the organizers, announced, “We got ’er spinning!”

He says the ice carousel is big enough to break the world record held by a town in Finland. A surveying team confirmed the measurements.

Volunteers used augurs to bore more than 1,300 holes, along with chain saws and other equipment, to cut the massive hole in lake ice that was 30 inches thick. They waited for warmer weather to get it spinning.

Naked and unafraid: Nude man jogs through Baltimore streets

BALTIMORE

With Baltimore temperatures hovering around 40 degrees Fahrenheit, a naked jogger may have pruned, but he certainly proved to be no prude.

The Baltimore Sun reports that the sight of the naked man jogging through downtown Baltimore jolted commuters during morning rush hour April 9. In addition to clothes, the man eschewed shoes as he slowly trotted past a hospital and a courthouse.

Witnesses reported the man didn’t seem lost or confused. Attorney Nicholas Panteleakis says he stopped at a traffic light 5 to 10 feet from the cardio enthusiast.

Baltimore police spokeswoman Detective Nicole Monroe says officers drove up the street in response to several 911 calls, but the man had disappeared, evading an indecent-exposure charge.

Police, fed up with cold weather, ‘arrests’ winter

DEPEW, N.Y.

An upstate New York police department fed up with lingering cold weather has placed winter under arrest.

The Post-Standard reports the Depew Police Department wrote April 6 in a humorous Facebook post that it had arrested the season. Police said any more snow winter produces would be held against it in court.

The department also called for groundhog Punxsutawney Phil to turn himself in for predicting six more weeks of winter. Police joke that they’re willing to look past winter’s “most recent transgressions” if it works with the department.

New York has experienced wintry weather this month and high winds that caused power outages.
