2 Houston-area deputies and gunman wounded in shootout

HOUSTON (AP) — Two Harris County constable deputies have been wounded in a shootout that authorities say also left the gunman wounded and two other deputies injured.

Constable Mark Herman says one of the deputies shot with a shotgun is hospitalized in stable condition. The other has received treatment for a shotgun pellet wound to his head.

Herman says two deputies suffered cuts and scrapes as they dove for cover.

Sheriff's spokesman Thomas Gilliland says the deputies had responded to a phone call early Tuesday from a man who sounded suicidal. He emerged from a home with a shotgun. Gilliland says it's unclear who shot first.

Gilliland says all four deputies hit the unidentified gunman. He was shot 22 times. He's in serious condition and facing four counts of aggravated assault on a police officer.
