Women down WSU for perfect home season

Youngstown State remained unbeaten in Horizon League play with a 6-1 win over Wright State on Sunday morning at the Boardman Tennis Center.

The win gave YSU (12-9, 7-0 Horizon League) a perfect home season in which it was 7-0 on the campaign.

The doubles point took nearly an hour to decide in the three-hour contest. Five of the six singles matches went three sets.

YSU picked up a 6-1 at No. 2 while the Raiders won at No. 1 by a score of 6-2.

In singles play, YSU picked up the first win with Noelly Longi Nsimba defeated Karoline Haller 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 at No. 1. Next to pickup a win was Cassandra Moraleja at No. 6. Moraleja picked up a 6-3 in the first set over Grace Whitney.

Senior Sofia Macias capped off her home YSU career with a memorable match. In the third set, Macias trailed 5-1 before rallying to lead 8-7. However, Morgan had a match point at 9-8, but Macias tied the contest when Morgan hit a return into the net. Macias picked up the final two points to win the third set, 11-9.

Men finish strong with win over Wright State

Youngstown State finished off a strong weekend of play with a 5-2 win over Wright State on Sunday at the Boardman Tennis Center.

The Penguins improve to 9-12 overall and 3-2 in Horizon League play.

The Penguins (9-12, 3-2 Horizon League) won quickly at No. 2 as Yossi Dahan and Danylo Veremeichuk beat Param Pum and Marcel Ueltzhoeffer by a score of 6-1. The Penguins clinched the point as Vasilis Vardakis and Joao Garretto beat WSU’s Michal Kianicka and Fernando Nardelli by a score of 6-3.

In singles play, Dahan and Bassem El Mekawi cruised to a pair of victories.

Corbett takes fourth in shot at Bucknell

LEWISBURG, PA.

Youngstown State’s Jaynee Corbett finished fourth in the shot put on Sunday during competition at the final day of action at the Bucknell Outdoor Classic.

Corbett was fourth in the shot put with a throw of 14.93m. Freshman Katilyn Merwin was 15th at 12.66m and Nicolette Kreatsoulas had a mark of 11.91m.

The top women’s runner on Sunday was Nicole Squatrito, who ran a time of 2:14.90 in the 800m. For the men, Sean Peterson ran a time of 1:54.59 in the 800m.

In other throwing events, Dom Westbay had a toss of 14.73m in the shot put, while Reshanna Simon had a throw of 44.28m in the hammer throw.
