Weather service issues flood warnings for Mahoning River

YOUNGSTOWN — The National Weather Service has updated flood warnings for the Mahoning River in Youngstown, Warren and Leavittsburg from this afternoon until Tuesday morning.

Minor flooding is expected in those areas.

The flood stage in Youngstown was 13.4 feet at 11 a.m. today with flooding occurring at 14 feet. By this afternoon, the river is expected to rise to near 15 feet by this evening and will fall below the flood stage by late tonight, according to the NWS.

Water is expected to cause flooding into industrial areas along the river in Youngstown as well as on River and Front streets in Girard and state Route 46 and First Street in Niles, according to the weather service.

The flood stage was at 9.3 feet in Warren at 10 a.m. today. By this afternoon, the river is expected to rise to 11.6 feet with water spreading to Lynwood Drive and Olian Avenue. The river will fall below flood stage by early Tuesday morning, the weather service said.

The river in Leavittsburg was already causing minor flooding this morning in neighborhoods mainly south of Turner Road as well as Riverview Drive and Lover’s Lane. The river will continue to rise from 13 feet at 11 a.m. to nearly 14.6 feet by this evening, the weather service said.

The river will fall below flood stage Tuesday evening.
