Man, Woman of the Year honored by Saxon Club

The Youngstown Saxon Club, 710 S. Meridian Road, recently honored its Woman and Man of the Year at the 42nd annual President’s Goulash Dinner that took place April 14. Rose Marie Zamary was honored by the Ladies Lodge Branch 22 of the Alliance of Transylvania Saxons and Robert Bachinger was honored by the Men’s Lodge Branch 30.

In addition to the Man and Woman of the Year, six 40-year and four 50-year honor members were recognized at the event and the Saxon Group Culture Band provided musical entertainment.

Zamary was born in Yongstown to Alex and Jennie (Veres) Vargo. She is a graduate of Campbell Memorial High School. Zamary is the mother of four children, Kenneth Zamary; Kimberly (Joe) Sefcik; Kathleen (David) Bernat; and the late Karen Zamary. She also has four grandchildren, Kristin (John Andrews) Bernat; David Bernat; Jared Jones; and Marissa Eason.

She has been an active member of the club for 16 years, serving on several committees as well as playing on the Saxon Ladies Bocce League. She is a member of the Hungarian Presbyterian Church.

Her other memberships include Youngstown Mothers of Twins, serving as president twice; The Ohio Federation of Mothers of Twins, serving as an officer; first woman to serve as commodore of the Lake Milton Boat Club; Crazy Eight Card Club; and the D.A.R.E. group, for which she served as president.

She has worked for Sparkle Market, Dr. John F. Steele, MVI Homecare and Senior Employment Center. She retired from Meridian Health Care.

Bachinger was born Oct. 17, 1961, to John and Maria (Karsti) Bachinger. He graduated from Austintown Fitch High School in 1979 and earned a mechanical welding certification from Mahoning County Joint Vocational School.

He and his wife, Susan, have been married for 36 years. They have two daughters, Lauren (John) Mshar and Dana (Chris) Carlevale and three grandsons, John Robert and Carson Anthony Mshar and Quinn Coen Carlevale.

Bachinger has been employed by Compco Industries for the past 37 years where he is executive vice president in charge of information systems and quality.

He has been a member of the Allliance of Transylvania Saxons as well as the Youngstown Saxon Club all his life. He has been a member of the Saxon Club Culture Group since the age of 5, where he participated in the children’s choir and at the age of 9, began to perform in the youth dance group, which was started by his mother. At 12, he started playing in the Youngstown Saxon Group Brass Band. The next year, he began working as a dishwasher and busboy at the club.

Within Branch 30, Bachinger was co-chairman of the 500 Club for four years and chairman of the New Year’s Eve party for several years. He also has been chairman of the ATS golf outing four times as well as played on the Saxon softball team and bowled in the TSBL Traveling League. He has also served as first vice president, third vice president, secretary and trustee. Bachinger participated in multiple Heimattag celebrations and served as co-chairman for the last one that took place in Youngstown in 2016.

He currently holds the position of president of the Youngstown Saxon Culture Group, for which he recently coordinated a trip to Romania. The group was invited to perform in the first International Sachsentreffen in Siebenburgen in the city of Hermannsdadt for the president and more than 20,000 Saxons.
