Boardman student to compete in Quiz Bowl Championship

Staff report

BOARDMAN

The Hyatt Regency O’Hare in Rosemont, Ill. will host 100 high school students today to determine the top quiz bowl player in the country. The inaugural National Academic Quiz Tournaments Individual Player National Championship Tournament will gather students from 30 states for a series of rounds of competition. Boardman High School senior Pranav Padmanabhan will compete.

Quiz bowl is a competitive, academic, interscholastic activity for teams of four students that tests the depth and breadth of the students’ knowledge. Players use buzzers to answer questions about science, math, history, literature, mythology, geography, social science, current events, sports and popular culture. Participation reinforces lessons from the classroom and encourages players to develop new intellectual interests.

The hotel also hosted NAQT’s Intercollegiate Championship Tournament, featuring 68 teams of top collegiate players Saturday. Later this month and in May, some of the students playing this weekend will return for the Middle School and Small School Championships. The High School National Championship Tournament, in which a record 352 teams will compete, will take place in Atlanta on Memorial Day weekend. Tournament results will be updated throughout the competition at www.naqt.com.
