Source: Browns near extension with Landry

CLEVELAND

Jarvis Landry is about to make a major grab.

The star wide receiver is close to finalizing a multiyear contract extension with the Browns, who believe the three-time Pro Bowler can hasten their turnaround. The team and Landry’s representatives are closing in on a deal, a person with direct knowledge of the negotiations told The Associated Press on Thursday.

The sides remain in talks but expect to complete the contract soon, according to the person who spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal has not been finalized. ESPN first reported Landry’s extension.

Landry led the NFL with 112 receptions last season and his new contract is expected to make him one of the league’s highest paid pass catchers.

The Browns, who are coming off a 0-16 season, acquired Landry from Miami in a trade last month. Cleveland sent a fourth-round pick in 2018 and seventh-rounder in 2019 to the Dolphins, who had signed Landry to a $16 million, one-year franchise tag to make the exchange possible.

OHSAA approves extending baseball

The Ohio High School Athletic Association Board of Directors have approved extending the 2019 baseball season by one week.

The number of regular-season games permitted will remain at 27. The 2019 state tournament will be June 6-8 instead of May 30-June 1.

The board received the attendance and financial reports from the 2017 football playoffs. The overall attendance for the five rounds of the playoffs decreased by 34,106 tickets. The announced total attendance for the seven state championship games in Canton was 61,312, which was up from 55,421 in 2016 in Columbus.

Scrappers release 2018 promotional schedule

The Mahoning Valley Scrappers announced their promotional schedule for the 20th season at Eastwood Field.

Season highlights include seven post-game firework displays, four full-size bobblehead giveaways, six Buck Nights and three specialty jersey nights.

The bobbleheads will feature three former Scrappers: Jose Ramirez on June 23, Francisco Mejia on July 7, and Triston McKenzie on Aug. 25. , Major League Umpire and Poland resident John Hirschbeck will round out the bobbleheads on July 14.

The Scrappers will wear three specialty jerseys that will be auctioned off at the games and at mvscrappers.com. Dates are: June 22 (“Star Wars”), July 14 (Batman Superhero) and Aug. 18 (1999 Scrappers jerseys)

Weekly promotions include Every Monday Matters at Eastwood Field.

Tuesdays will feature $2 pizza slices and Wednesdays are Military Appreciation Nights.

Buck Nights are set on Thursday. Fireworks will follow Friday games as well as on July 4. Sundays are Family Fun Days featuring kids’ themed activities all game long.

YSU baseball makes more schedule changes

YOUNGSTOWN

Scheduling changes have been made to the Youngstown State baseball team’s weekend series at Wright State.

The Penguins and Raiders will play a doubleheader at Nischwitz Stadium today beginning at 4 p.m. and a single game on Saturday at 2 p.m.

The two teams were originally scheduled to play today, Saturday and Sunday.

This is the fifth straight weekend that the Penguins have had changes made to a Horizon League series due to weather.
