Books, Bags and Bling sale to be April 21
Poland United Methodist Church will host the annual Books, Bags and Bling sale on April 21 from 9 a.m. until noon. The church is located at 1940 Boardman-Poland Road in Poland.
Holy Family Seniors Group to have April 16 meeting
The Holy Family Seniors Group will meet on April 16 at 11:30 a.m. in Holy Family Parish Hall. Lunch will be served at noon, followed by Bingo and card games. Hostesses for this month are Jani Stamp, Gert Baldwin and Pat Kasaris. The cost of lunch each month is $4. Any member who did not pay their dues in March are asked to pay at the April meeting. The cost of the annual membership is $10. New members are also invited to join at this time.
Local historical society to meet
The Poland Historical Society will meet at 6:30 p.m. on April 17 at the Little Red Schoolhouse, located at 4515 Center Road (State Route 224) in Poland. Following the business meeting, a program about the Ohio Indian Mounds will be presented by Ted Heineman at 7:30 p.m.
Ukulele group to meet
There will be another Steel Valley Ukers meeting at the Austintown library on April 21 from 3-5 p.m. The group is a non-profit, and there is no fee to attend any of their meetings. The group plays ukuleles and is open to people of all ages and skill levels.
Local shrine club to host dinner event
The Youngstown Shrine Club will be hosting a spaghetti dinner on April 29 at the club’s main hall. Tickets are $10 for adults and dinner will be served from 11:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. The meal includes spaghetti and meatballs, salad, bread and a beverage, as well as dessert. This is a community event and the public is invited to attend. Tickets can be purchased in advance from any club officer or on the day of the event; carry-outs are also available. Program a robot
Find out how to program Lego Mindstorms Robots at the Poland library on April 28 at 3 p.m. Learn about the Lego Mindstorms software and use it to program robots to get through challenges. This event is for those in fifth grade and up. Call 330-744-8636 to register as space is limited.
Trim a tree for April
Decorate an ornament for our all-seasons tree. This is for children of all ages during regular hours at the Poland library.
Dunkin’ Donuts helps feed local families
Now through April 30, Dunkin’ Donuts in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties will be selling icons for a $1 donation to Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley. With every icon purchased, the customer receives a $1 off coupon for a pound of coffee. For every $1 given, the Food Bank can distribute $11 worth of food to hungry families in our community. Last year, Dunkin’ Donut locations in the Mahoning Valley raised more than $21,000 to feed local families. The campaign is a collaborative effort of four food banks, including Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley, the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank and Second Harvest Food Bank of North Central Ohio. All funds raised will remain in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties to feed our friends and neighbors. Blood pressure screenings by Salem Area Visiting Nurse Association will be at the Poland library on April 20 from 10:30-11:30 a.m.
Have a snack and learn to sign
This event is for all fifth- through eighth-graders, Come to the Poland library after school to learn sign language and about Deaf culture through fun, interactive games and activities on April 27 at 3:30 p.m. A snack will be provided.
Baby Brilliant presents Playtime at Your Library
Prepare for kindergarten through play at the Poland library on April 27 at 10 a.m. Read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for Kindergarten. Activities will vary at each program. This program is for children who are ages 2-6 and all children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult.
Poland library to host fundraiser
On April 15 at 1 p.m. at the Poland library, there will be a ‘Book Review and a Soup and Salad, Too’ fundraiser for Springfield library with guest speaker Christine Ridarsky, Historian for the City of Rochester, N.Y. and Manager of the Local History and Genealogy Division of the Central Library of Rochester, N.Y. She is a Springfield Local High School graduate. This is a book review and a soup and salad luncheon for $20. The books is “Susan B. Anthony and Struggle for Equal Rights.” There will be a basket raffle and a 50/50 raffle. Proceeds benefit the Springfield Library Capital Campaign. Yoga class offered by Friends of the Library
Friends of PLYMC is sponsoring a Yoga Class every Wednesday in April at the Poland library in the meeting room at 5 p.m. It is $10 a session and you can pay as you attend. These classes are for adults.
Learn ASL with Baby Brilliant program
Learn how to use American Sign Language (ASL) with your child through rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Poland library on April 25 at 10 a.m. Learn easy corresponding signs to learn and share with your little ones.
Poland Lions host annual fundraiser
The Poland Lions are hosting their annual Treasures of the Trunk Sale on June 9. The event takes place from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Poland High School’s stadium parking lot, located at State Route 170 and Dobbins Road. Vendors are being sought for this one-day sale. Crafters, home goods, furniture, toys, specialty items and garage sale items are welcome. No hot food or soft drink venders or raffle drawings. There is a limit of 100 spaces and you must bring your own table (tables up to 8 feet in length work best in front of your trunk). The cost per space is $15 until May 1. Spaces increase to $20 after May 1. Vendors may arrive after 7:30 a.m. and must be in their assigned spot by 8:30 a.m. No refunds are given for any reason and the event will take place rain or shine. Read to Roxie
Relax and read to Roxie, a registered therapy dog with Therapy Dogs International at the Poland library on April 17 at 6 p.m. Each child will be given a 15-minute reading session while spots remain. Call 330-744-8636 and ask for the Poland Library to register. This program is for grades 1-4.
Celebrate 40 years with Northeast Ohio Adoption Services
The Northeast Ohio Adoption Services is celebrating 40 years of families and children by offering an Evening with Dominic Tocco & Brotherhood. The event will take place on April 21 from 6-10 p.m. at The Lake Club in Poland. Enjoy a variety of music from Frank Sinatra, to Pitbull to Bruno Mars. A balloon pull and live and chance auctions will also be available. Tickets are $100 per person, which includes two drinks, or $175 per couple which includes four drinks. Friendly Squares to hold dance April 14
The Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance on April 14 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State Street in Niles. Gene Hammond will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be calling line dances. This will be a high/low dance with alternating tips for new dancers currently taking lessons and tips for more experienced dancers. Dress is casual and light refreshments will be served. Golf Classic bus trip
The 2018 Pink Ribbon Golf Classic committee is sponsoring a bus trip to Seneca Allegheny Casino on April 14. All proceeds from this trip will be given to the American Cancer Society. The bus will leave from Fab Limo on Connecticut Avenue in Austintown at 8 a.m. and depart from Seneca at 5 p.m. The cost is $40 per person and each player will be given $25 in play and a $5 food coupon. Join the Poland library every Thursday at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.
Bonding with babies and books
This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months at the Poland library every Wednesday in April at 10 a.m. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.
4-H Endowment Dinner and Auction to be April 21
The second annual 4-H Endowment Dinner and Auction will take place April 21 at Mr. Anthony’s Banquet Center, located at 7440 South Ave. in Boardman. A silent auction will begin at 5 p.m. with dinner starting at 6 p.m. and a live auction to follow. Auction items range from gift baskets to top-quality firearms to 2018 OSU Football tickets and more. Proceeds from this auction will benefit the Mahoning County 4-H Endowment fund, an interest-bearing account maintained at the Ohio State University, which is used to benefit Mahoning County 4-H. This fund allows 4-H members to partake in many leadership and team building events such as the Ohio 4-H Leadership Camp, Ohio 4-H Sea Camp, 4-H Camp Whitewood and leadership conferences in Washington D.C. Pink Ribbon Golf Classic to be in July
The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 16. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. Poland Historical Society spring 2018 meetings and topics announced
The Poland Historical Society membership drive for 2018 is underway, and annual membership dues are $10 per person. Checks should be made payable to Poland Historical Society and can be mailed to the Poland Historical Society, P.O. Box 5052, Poland, OH 44514. Include your name, address, phone number and email address. Membership dues and donations are vitally important to the society in their efforts to maintain the Little Red Schoolhouse museum and to “Preserve the Past for the Future.” Members are not obligated to attend monthly meetings, but are always welcome. The society makes an effort to provide informative, interesting programs following the business portion of each meeting. Program topics scheduled for the first five months of 2018 include March 21- “Walter Arrel, Inn on the Green;” April 18 - “Ohio Indian Mounds” and May 15 - “Poland Township Park.”

GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.
