CLUBS

Friends of the Mahoning River will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Oak Hill Collaborative, 507 Oak Hill, Youngstown. Parking is in the rear of the building. Featured speakers will be Guy Coviello, Youngstown Warren Regional Chamber; Calder Lenhart, Scout Troop 40, who will present his Eagle Scout proposed project; and Dawn Turnage, Youngstown Park and Recreation Director. Plans are being made for the seventh annual RiverFest on June 2 and a Friends paddle on the Mahoning River for June 9. Monday Night Writers will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday in the small meeting room at the Canfield Branch of the Public Library of Youngstown & Mahoning County, 43 W. COUNCILS

Youngstown Chapter of the National Council of Negro Women Inc. will host its monthly meeting Saturday at the McGuffey Centre, 1649 Jacobs Road, Youngstown. The executive board meets at noon and the general meeting is at 1 p.m. Tickets are also available for the annual Women of Distinction Luncheon, which will take place May 26.

Youngstown Council of Catholic Nurses will meet at noon Wednesday at The Manor, 3104 Canfield-Niles Road. Jessica Robinson, executive director of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, will give an overview of the charity.

DANCES

Friendly Squares will host its monthly square dance from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Saturday at the Niles SCOPE Center, 14 E. State St., Niles. Gene Hammond will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be calling line dances. This will be a high/low dance with alternating tips for new dancers currently taking lessons and tips for more experienced dancers. Dress is casual and light refreshments will be served. GROUPS

World War II Heritage Group will meet at 6 p.m. Monday for buffet dinner at A La Cart Catering, 429 Lisbon St., Canfield. Helen Laenen was in the Maastrich District of Holland prior to the war. Laenen was between age 10 and 12 and will share the story of her family, her pre-war and war memories, and the journey of immigration during this perilous time. GUILDS

Niles Chapter of the American Sewing Guild will host its 16th annual Spring Extravaganza Style and Creativity Show from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. April 28 at A La Cart Catering in Canfield. An elevated professional runway will be used for the show, featuring three guest designers. In addition, there will be a judged “Hello Doily” sewing challenge. LEAGUES

League of Women Voters of Trumbull County will host an open-to-the-public meeting at 6 p.m. April 23 at the Howland Library, 9095 E. Market St. A guest speaker will discuss the May primary and some issues on the ballot. The discussion will be followed by a question and answer period.

POLITICAL CLUBS

Trumbull County Republican Party will meet for breakfast at 9 a.m. April 21 at the Buckeye Club, 366 N. Park Ave., Warren. Dave Yost, Ohio State auditor, will be the guest speaker. Mother’s of the Crucifix Society of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Basilica will meet at 1:30 p.m. Sunday. President Cathy Zack will preside. Hostesses will be Angela DiFrangia, Marie Ronyak, Janice Kutsko, Beverly Pondillo and Carol Amicone.

Warren Women’s Connection, affiliate of Stonecroft Ministries, will host a luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday at DiLucia’s Banquet Center, 2610 Elm Road, NE. Speaker will be Sean Posey and will discuss “Theaters of Trumbull County.” Lori Kempton and Ilene Stroup also will be featured. Cost is $10 for first-timers, and all others are $13. SINGLES

D.A.R.E. Singles Group meets at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays at Disciples Christian Church, 565 Boardman-Canfield Road. SOCIETIES

Boardman Historical Society will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Boardman Library, 7680 Glenwood Ave. Program is open to the public, and admission is free. Tom Welsh, local author and historian will discuss his book, “Strouss’–Youngstown’s Dependable Department Store.”

William Holmes McGuffey Historical Society will meet for “Memories of a Lifetime” at 10 a.m. April 21 at Kravitz’s Deli meeting room, 3135 Belmont Ave. Loretta Ekoniak, author of “Slovaks of the Greater Mahoning Valley,” co-authored with Susan Summers, will present a program featuring the book. Program is open to the public. Admission is $5 for members and $6 for nonmembers. Refreshments will be served and a 50-50 raffle will take place to benefit the society’s education mission. SUPPORT GROUPS

Alzheimer Network Family Support Groups will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Girard Free Library, 105 E. Codependency and Grief Support Group will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the care center of the Kelley-Robb-Cummins Funeral Home, North Main St., Hubbard. The support group was formed to reach out to help families who have lost loved ones to alcohol or substance abuse.

Good Hope Lutheran Church, 98 Homestead Drive, Boardman, is hosting a grief support series through the GriefShare ministry from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays through May 1. The GriefShare team provides a safe, understanding place for individuals to move through their personal grief journeys. Participants need not be church members. Each session is self-contained, so participants may enter at any session. Participants are welcome to share stories, but are never forced. Attendance at consecutive sessions is encouraged for maximum benefit. Cost is $20. Checks should be made payable to Good Hope. Scholarships also are available at registration. Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home will offer a free Breakfast and Learn at 9 a.m. April 30 at TJ’s Restaurant in the Holiday Inn, Boardman, about preplanning a funeral experience. NAMI Mahoning Valley offers support and education to people and families dealing with serious mental illness. This group is specifically for individuals dealing with substance abuse and mental illness.
