Read to therapy bunnies at the library
The Bunnies in Baskets therapy bunnies of F5RS will have a “Read to Some Bunny” reading program at the Canfield library on April 16 at 6 p.m. Children from 5-12 years-old are invited to attend the event. Readers can bring a favorite book or choose one from the library. They can also tell their favorite story to a bunny. For more information or to register contact the Canfield library at 330-744-8636.
Local church hosts fundraising event
Canfield Presbyterian Church will be hosting its annual Trash & Treasure Sale on April 28 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Admittance to the sale is free and open to the public. It will feature slightly-used and reasonably-priced furniture, household goods, books, toys, baby items, electronics and sporting equipment, as well as jewelry, collectibles and antiques. All proceeds will benefit the church’s 2018 International Mission Team, which is traveling to the Dominican Republic and Haiti in July. Donations for the sale are also being accepted weekdays at the church between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. until April 23. No clothing, shoes, old computers or non-flat screen TVs will be accepted. The church is located at 140 W. Main St. in Canfield.
Ukulele group to meet
There will be another Steel Valley Ukers meeting at the Austintown library on April 21 from 3-5 p.m. The group is a non-profit, and there is no fee to attend any of their meetings. The group plays ukuleles and is open to people of all ages and skill levels.
Local shrine club to host dinner event
The Youngstown Shrine Club will be hosting a spaghetti dinner on April 29 at the club’s main hall. Tickets are $10 for adults and dinner will be served from 11:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. The meal includes spaghetti and meatballs, salad, bread and a beverage, as well as dessert. This is a community event and the public is invited to attend. Tickets can be purchased in advance from any club officer or on the day of the event; carry-outs are also available. Local church to have pasta dinner fundraiser
There will be a pasta dinner on April 15 from 12-2 p.m. at Western Reserve United Methodist Church, located at 4580 Canfield Road (State Route 62) in Canfield. The meal includes pasta with meatballs, salad, bread, dessert and a beverage. Carry-out is available. The cost is $10 for adults, $7 for children who are ages 6-12 and free for children who are ages 5 and under. This is a fundraising dinner which will benefit the July mission trip to orphanages in Ukraine.
Guided labyrinth walk season begins at The Ursuline Health and Wellness Center
The Ursuline Health and Wellness Center, located at 4280 Shields Road, begins its 2018 Guided Labyrinth Walk season with a walk on April 15 at 2 p.m. This year’s themes celebrate aspects of St. Angela Merici’s introduction to her Counsels. St. Angela founded the Ursuline order in 1535. All persons of faith are invited to participate in these free events. Walks generally take 20 minutes to half an hour. All walks are scheduled weather-permitting. There is no cost to use the labyrinth, which is handicapped-accessible and offers ample parking. Printed guides are provided at the Labyrinth’s entrance giving suggestions for following the path, but there is no right or wrong way to experience the sacred walk.
Ice Age in Ohio
Join the Ohio Certified Volunteer Naturalists on April 14 to listen to Dale Gnidovec, OSU Orton Geological Museum, speak about glacial effects on the land and more. Participants will also have the opportunity to learn about a dig that took place near Findlay. This event will take place from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at the Metroparks Farm, located at 7574 Columbiana-Canfield Road in Canfield. Registration is free, but space is limited so reservations are required. Spring Horticulture Seminar to be April 14
Spring into action on April 14 at the Spring Horticulture Seminar hosted by the Mahoning County Master Gardener Volunteers. This seminar offers gardening tips and tricks, two make and take classes, 10 breakout sessions and more. Keynote speaker Melinda Carmichael, Associate Director of Beech Creek Botanical Gardens and author of “Native Plants of Ohio,” will discuss the benefits of adding native plants to your landscape, and will be available for a book signing. Participants can get creative while making hypertufa pots and alcohol ink paintings and are also welcome to visit the garden art sale. Registration for the program is $40 per person, which includes a set of hand pruners, a hot lunch and proceedings from all sessions. Dunkin’ Donuts helps feed local families
Now through April 30, Dunkin’ Donuts in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties will be selling icons for a $1 donation to Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley. With every icon purchased, the customer receives a $1 off coupon for a pound of coffee. For every $1 given, the Food Bank can distribute $11 worth of food to hungry families in our community. Last year, Dunkin’ Donut locations in the Mahoning Valley raised more than $21,000 to feed local families. The campaign is a collaborative effort of four food banks, including Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley, the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank and Second Harvest Food Bank of North Central Ohio. All funds raised will remain in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties to feed our friends and neighbors. Canfield bank wins national award

Columbus Children’s Theatre presents “The Three Little Pigs”
Full of laughter, fun and audience participation, The Columbus Children’s Theatre’s adaptation of “The Three Little Pigs” is a great way to celebrate National Library Week. Join the Canfield library on April 28 at 2 p.m. and find out what really happened when the Three Little Pigs met the Big Bad Wolf on their way to seek their fortune and build a home. It’s raining cats and dogs and turtles and frogs
Join in the fun to vote for your favorite umbrella in the Canfield library Early Learning Area and help them choose their April winner. One vote per person per day and your vote enters you into a drawing for a gift certificate prize to Dough House Cookies at the Canfield library. Friendly Squares to hold dance April 14
The Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance on April 14 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State Street in Niles. Gene Hammond will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be calling line dances. This will be a high/low dance with alternating tips for new dancers currently taking lessons and tips for more experienced dancers. Dress is casual and light refreshments will be served. Golf Classic bus trip
The 2018 Pink Ribbon Golf Classic committee is sponsoring a bus trip to Seneca Allegheny Casino on April 14. All proceeds from this trip will be given to the American Cancer Society. The bus will leave from Fab Limo on Connecticut Avenue in Austintown at 8 a.m. and depart from Seneca at 5 p.m. The cost is $40 per person and each player will be given $25 in play and a $5 food coupon. Gotta Move Story Time presented at the library
Join the Canfield library every Wednesday at 10 a.m. and again at 11:30 a.m. for “Gotta Move Story Time.” This program is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a caregiver. Join them for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months at the Canfield library every Thursday in April at 10 a.m. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.
Pink Ribbon Golf Classic to be in July
The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 16. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. The Mahoning Valley Corvettes joins in with Salem car cruise for event
The call to take over The Salem Super cruise, Salem’s largest annual event attracting thousands, was recently answered by The Mahoning Valley Corvettes. The non-profit car club dates back to 1962 including members from every surrounding community and Salem. Many of the club members have enjoyed the Salem Super Cruise and will now partner with the City of Salem to put on the event entering its 14th year. The Salem Super Cruise is open to all cars and trucks, not just Corvettes. Motorcycles are also welcome. The weekend benefits the Second Harvest Foodbank, which feeds many hungry local families. The event will take place June 7-10 and will feature activities, some free, including a parade, car show, food, live bands and more. The Mahoning Valley Corvettes look forward to partnering with the City of Salem to provide a this weekend for the entire family.

GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg).
