Band and Orchestra Parents to host fundraising event
The Boardman Band and Orchestra Parents will host a Night at the Races on April 14 at St. Luke’s Banquet Hall, located at 5235 South Avenue in Boardman. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. The evening will include $2 horse bets, a horse auction, Chinese auction, 50/50 drawing and $2 and $5 sideboards. Tickets are $15 at the door and include admission and food. This event is bring your own beverage (all beverages except water).
Boardman Historical Society hosts local author and historian
Local author and historian Tom Welsh will be the guest speaker on April 14 for the Boardman Historical Society at 10 a.m. at the Boardman library. Welsh will present a program based upon his book title “Strouss’: Youngstown’s Dependable Department Store,” which he coauthored with Michael Geltz. The program is part of a new series of BHS public offerings. The presentation is open to the public. A question and answer period will be available after the 45 minute program. Admission is free and reservations are suggested. Walk-ins are welcomed and admitted based upon seating availability. Pruning clinic offered at the Boardman Park
There will be a hands-on pruning clinic at the historic Smith Family Homestead, located at 8270 Raupp Ave. in Boardman, which is off of Washington Boulevard, on April 25 from 1-3 p.m. The clinic is sponsored by the Ohio State Extension Service, Boardman Park and the Mahoning Valley Landscape and Nursery Association. Participants will learn to prune for maximum flower potential, disease reduction, regeneration and shape. Additionally, proper pruning techniques and tools will be discussed. There will be hands-on training and participants are encouraged to dress for the weather and bring a lawn chair if needed. Pre-registration is required. The fee is $20 per person, which includes a set of hand pruners and a set of handouts. Registration forms are available at Boardman Park or at the Ohio State Extension office, located at 490 S. Dunkin’ Donuts helps feed local families
Now through April 30, Dunkin’ Donuts in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties will be selling icons for a $1 donation to Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley. With every icon purchased, the customer receives a $1 off coupon for a pound of coffee. For every $1 given, the Food Bank can distribute $11 worth of food to hungry families in our community. Last year, Dunkin’ Donut locations in the Mahoning Valley raised more than $21,000 to feed local families. The campaign is a collaborative effort of four food banks, including Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley, the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank and Second Harvest Food Bank of North Central Ohio. All funds raised will remain in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties to feed our friends and neighbors. Ukulele group to meet
There will be another Steel Valley Ukers meeting at the Austintown library on April 21 from 3-5 p.m. The group is a non-profit, and there is no fee to attend any of their meetings. The group plays ukuleles and is open to people of all ages and skill levels.
Local shrine club to host dinner event
The Youngstown Shrine Club will be hosting a spaghetti dinner on April 29 at the club’s main hall. Tickets are $10 for adults and dinner will be served from 11:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. The meal includes spaghetti and meatballs, salad, bread and a beverage, as well as dessert. This is a community event and the public is invited to attend. Tickets can be purchased in advance from any club officer or on the day of the event; carry-outs are also available. Meet and enjoy creating Lego designs at the Boardman library on April 14 at 10 a.m. Legos will be provided for this program for children who are ages 6 and up.
Join game night for adults
Play the hand you’re dealt of cards (Rummy), dice (Farkle) and Scrabble at the Boardman library on April 26 at 7 p.m. Bring a friend or two and join them on the fourth Thursday of the month for snacks and bragging rights in this one hour program for adults.
Business workshop presented at the library
This workshop provides the basics to understand every section of a business plan through resources of the library. Baby Brilliant offers playtime at the library
Prepare for Kindergarten through play at the Boardman library on April 18 at 10 a.m. They will read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for Kindergarten. This program is for ages 2-6 and all children under seven must be accompanied by an adult.
Smart money story time at the library
Celebrate Money Smart Week with stories, games and a craft at the Boardman library April 25 at 10 a.m. This program is for children of all ages and allowed only one bank per child who is attending the program. Children under the age of 7 must be accompanied by an adult.
Boardman Park’s community garden to start planting
While it may still be too early for digging and planting it’s not too early to join the community garden and start planning what fresh vegetables will be on your dinner table this summer. Whether you have a green thumb and are an experienced gardener or whether you are a beginner, community gardens allow you to experience the joys of gardening, promote healthy eating habits and build new relationships with others in the community. The garden is located at the Historic Southern Stables on Washington Boulevard. Registration for the 10 feet by 20 feet garden plots begins on April 2 at the Boardman Park Office, located at 375 Boardman-Poland Road, and are available for a fee of $25. Your fee includes the garden plot, water and periodic classes/instructions on gardening. Due to the limited number of plots available, registration is limited to Boardman residents only. I read YA book club to meet
Adult fans of Young Adult Literature, this book club is for you. Talk about why you like YA at the Boardman library on April 16 at 6:30 p.m. This month they will be discussing “Winter Girls” by Laurie Halse Anderson.
Park to host day camp during summer
Boardman Park’s Adventure Day Camp will soon begin. The goal of the camp is to offer young minds the opportunity to explore their imaginations, discover physical fitness, expand their knowledge of sports and develop a growing sense of adventure through diverse activities. The curriculum is designed to be age appropriate, educational and fun as the children participate in a daily schedule of arts and crafts, team building, creative arts, science and sports. Adventure Day Camp will run for 10 weeks, starting on June 11 and running through Aug. 17. The Camp hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. for children who have completed kindergarten through sixth grade. Arrangements can be made if you need to bring campers early or pick them up later for an additional charge. Registration begins on April 2. The pursuit of endurance with Jennifer Pharr Davis
Jennifer Pharr Davis, record-holder of the fastest known time on the Appalachian Trail, will reveal the secrets and habits behind endurance at the Boardman library on April 19 at 7 p.m. With a storyteller’s ear for fascinating detail and description, Pharr Davis will take readers along as she trains and sets her record and gives easy to understand tips and action items to help participants take perseverance to the next level.
Westminster Presbyterian Church offers used book sale
Just as April brings us the promise of May flowers, it is also the month of the annual Westminster Presbyterian Church Used Book Sale. For the 62nd consecutive year, thousands of books will be available to purchase. Categories of books include fiction, non fiction, sports, hobbies and religion, cookbooks, an especially a large section devoted to children’s books for all ages as well as video games, music CDs, vinyl, DVDs and puzzles. This year’s sale will take place on April 25 from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. and April 26 and 27 from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. On April 26, all paperbacks are 25 cents. On the 27th until 4 p.m., all books are half price. After 4 p.m. on the 27th, books are sold for $1 for a grocery bag, provided by the sale. Friendly Squares to hold dance April 14
The Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance on April 14 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State Street in Niles. Gene Hammond will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be calling line dances. This will be a high/low dance with alternating tips for new dancers currently taking lessons and tips for more experienced dancers. Dress is casual and light refreshments will be served. Golf Classic bus trip
The 2018 Pink Ribbon Golf Classic committee is sponsoring a bus trip to Seneca Allegheny Casino on April 14. All proceeds from this trip will be given to the American Cancer Society. The bus will leave from Fab Limo on Connecticut Avenue in Austintown at 8 a.m. and depart from Seneca at 5 p.m. The cost is $40 per person and each player will be given $25 in play and a $5 food coupon. Tales and Talk for 2’s and 3’s announced for April
Join the Boardman library every Wednesday at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.
Bonding with babies and books
This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months at the Boardman library every Tuesday in April at 10 a.m. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.

Pink Ribbon Golf Classic to be in July
The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 16. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. Play Bookopoly at the library
Teens and adults, play Bookopoly for fun and prizes. Pick up your game board and instructions at any branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County and play Bookopoly through March 31. Work your way around the game board by completing tasks, such as checking out a book, visiting our Pop-up Library or getting out into the community. Completing color sets earns you an entry slip for a prize drawing for a $10 Amazon gift card. Complete the entire board to enter into a drawing to win a Kindle Fire. The contest ends March 31 and all prizes will be awarded on April 16.

GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg).
