WBMS invites public to talent show

BELOIT

The West Branch Middle School student council is inviting community members to attend its talent show and bake sale at 5:30 p.m. Friday. The event will take place in the middle school cafeteria and a $1 donation is encouraged at the door. The idea for the talent show came together as a way to help a fellow student who has been home fighting an illness since October. All proceeds from the event will be donated to the family. Students will showcase a variety of talents, from musical performances to composition readings and dance routines. Donated baked goods and beverages also will be available for purchase before and during the performances.

Organizations to recognize Denim Day

COMPASS Family & Community Services, along with its Rape Crisis and Counseling Center and Sojourner House Domestic Violence Program have joined with community partners, including Someplace Safe Domestic Violence Shelter, Mahoning Valley Sexual Assault Response Team, the Trumbull County Domestic Violence Task Force, and Community Legal Aid to make a social statement with fashion April 25 by wearing jeans as a visible demonstration against the misconceptions that surround sexual assault.

Denim Day is an international campaign to prevent sexual violence through education and public awareness. April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and Denim Day was originally triggered when the Italian Supreme Court overturned a rape conviction because the justices felt that since the victim was wearing tight jeans she must have helped her rapist remove them, thereby implying consent. The next day, women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans in protest of the ruling and in solidarity with the victim. The organizations are hoping to collect photos for use on social media as a part of the campaign. Photos can be shared through email or through social media tagging to the COMPASS Family & Community Services Facebook page.

RoboCats to host pancake breakfast

GIRARD

A pancake breakfast will take place from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the IFH club, 33 W. Wilson Ave., to benefit the Girard’s First Robotics Aptiv Team, the RoboCats. Tickets are $6 per person and will be available at the door or from any RoboCat team member. The menu includes sausage, all-you-can-eat pancakes and beverages. A 50-50 and raffle of $200 in scratch-off lottery tickets will be offered. Profits will be used to help fund the team for the World Championships in Detroit. This is the fourth year in a row that the team has qualified for the event. Patrons should enter at the rear of the building.

Library to host local author

EAST PALESTINE

Sean Posey, author of “Lost Youngstown and Historic Theaters of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley,” will visit East Palestine Memorial Public Library to talk about his books on Youngstown’s history at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
