YSU’s Zallow, Harden among Quad winners

Chad Zallow and Collin Harden earned event wins for the Youngstown State men’s and women’s track and field teams on Saturday at the Northeast Ohio Quad hosted by Akron which featured a number of local athletes.

Chad Zallow ran a time of 13.77 seconds to win the 110m hurdles by 0.52 seconds. Harden, a Girard graduate, won the 300m hurdles with a time of 37.78 seconds. Zallow also picked up a victory in the 150m dash with a time of 15.89 seconds.

YSU took three of the top five spots in the men’s 100m dash. Carl Zallow was second running a time of 10:83 seconds, Brendon Lucas, of Boardman, finished fourth with a time of 10.97 seconds. Lucas was fourth in the 150m with a time of 16.32 seconds.

In the 300m, Iva Domitrovich, from McDonald, ran a time of 40.86 seconds. For the men, Harden was third in the 300m with a time of 34.63 seconds.

YSU’s McKinsie and Michelle Klim, of Poland performed well in the women’s 5,000m run. McKinsie Klim placed second with a time of 17:52.17 while Michelle Klim was third at 18:15.22. For the men, YSU placed second and third in the 5,000m. Finishing second was Girard Indian Derek Basinger with a time of 15:52.26.

In the steepelchase, Western Reserve graduate Ashleigh Rowley ran a time of 12:04.98. For the men, Maplewood grad Derek Morrison had a time of 10:35.32 in the steeplechase.

Former Austintown Fitch Falcon C.J. Schumacher finished fourth in the 1,500m with a time of 4:06.54.

Arnaldo Morales, a Struthers graduate, took second in the high jump clearing a height of 2.05m. Morales and Akron’s Curtis Richardson each cleared 2.05m but Richardson cleared the mark on his first attempt.

In the discus, Canfield graduate Andrew Hallof had a throw of 44.75m to lead the men.

The Penguins are next in action at the Bucknell Bison Outdoor Classic set for Friday and Saturday.

Mount Union, locals perform well at Open

Mount Union’s women’s track and field won six events Saturday at the John Homon Open.

Two of the Purple Raiders wins came from sophomore Rachael Adams as the sophomore won both the 100 meters (12.36) and 200 meters (25.43). Both times are currently 14th best in NCAA Division III this season.

Four other wins came from junior Hilary Reigle in the 1500 meters (4:43.66), sophomore Rachel Richenberg (Webster, N.Y. / Canandaigua Academy) in the hammer throw (132-9) and senior Nicole Rinaldi in the 10,000 meters (40:33.70) and freshman Alexianna Johnson in the long jump (18-0.5).

Newton Falls graduate Tori Blandine finished sixth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.19 seconds.

Mariah Eisenbraun, a United graduate, ran the 200-meter dash in 27.18 seconds to finish ninth.

The No. 11 ranked Mount Union men’s track and field team had four NCAA provisional qualifying performances Saturday at the John Homon Open at Mount Union Stadium.

Lucas Cooper came in third for the Raiders in the discus. Cooper, a United grauate, finished with a throw of 48.05 meters.

Penguins win two in Oakland doubleheader

The Youngstown State softball team pushed its Horizon League win streak to three after sweeping a doubleheader from Oakland on Saturday afternoon at the Covelli Sports Complex. The Penguins won the opener, 8-3, and 9-3 in the nightcap.

The Penguins (13-17, 4-4 Horizon League) came back to win the opener by scoring six runs over the final three innings after trailing 3-2 through four.

Junior Paige Geanangel tied a career-high with seven strikeouts and allowed just six hits in her complete-game victory and earned her 29th career win.

YSU cranked out 11 hits led by Hannah Lucas, Lexi Zappitelli, Yazmine Romero and Cali Mikovich, who each had two. Maddi Lusk drove in three runs for the Penguins.

Zappitelli gave the Penguins a 4-3 lead when she scored on a wild pitch and Mikovich’s two-out double plated Taylor to put the Penguins up two.

Freshman Milena Lacatena crushed a solo home run to lead off the top of the sixth to extend the YSU lead to 6-3. It marked the first hit of Lacatena’s collegiate career.

In the nightcap, freshman Elle Buffenbarger struck out eight 4.1 innings of relielf to earn her third win of the year. She scattered just three hits and gave up one run.

Youngstown State capitalized on an Oakland error in top of the third to score three runs, including two unearned. Zappitelli singled home Tatum Christy, who reached on an error, and later scored on a wild pitch. Mikovich singled up the middle to drive in Romero and put the Penguins up 3-0.

The Golden Grizzlies (8-19, 2-3 HL) scored two unearned runs and tied the game at 3-3 with a run in the bottom of the four inning.

Lusk bashed a two-run home run in the top of the fifth to regain the lead for YSU, 5-3.

The Penguins and Golden Grizzlies conclude the series with a single game, Sunday, at 2 p.m.

YSU, Oakland finale called due to snow

An overnight snowfall combined with February-like weather has forced a cancelation of the Youngstown State baseball team’s series finale with Oakland on Saturday afternoon at Eastwood Field.

Weather largely affected the series between the Penguins and Golden Grizzlies. It was originally scheduled to be played at Oakland, but it was moved to Eastwood Field due to unplayable conditions in Rochester, Mich. YSU and Oakland battled cold temperatures throughout a doubleheader split on Friday, and a wintry mix began toward the end of game two.

The Penguins and Golden Grizzlies are scheduled to play a three-game series at the Oakland Baseball Field on May 4-6.

Pikunas has off day, Akron shot 30-over

The Akron Zips women’s golf team posted a 318 (+30) opening round score, ranking tied for ninth overall at the Dolores Black Falcon Invitational on Saturday.

Akron is currently tied with host Bowling Green at the par-72 Stone Ridge course that spans 5, 829 yards, while Toledo leads the 16-team field with a 304 (+16) total. Toledo’s Pinyada Kuvanun currently leads the individual race with an even-par 72 ledger, while Ball State’s Sydney Anderson holds the runner-up spot with a 74 (+2) tally.

Akron junior Danielle Nicholson is currently tied for 11th overall with a 76 (+4) performance and is just one stroke behind an eight-way stalemate for the third position. Nicholson led the Zips’ scoring efforts, carding 12 pars and a birdie with five bogeys.

Senior Pader Her and sophomore Allyson Wentworth followed for Akron with 80 (+8) scores. Both, Her and Wentworth are tied for the 37th position, while freshman Jacinta Pikunas, a Boardman graduate, ranks 52nd overall with an 82 (+10) tournament total.

The Zips are scheduled to play the final 18-hole round of the 36-hole tournament on today at 11 a.m. and starting from holes No. 9-11. Fans can follow the action via GolfStat Live Scoring.

Mount Union, Kohut fall to Northern Ohio

The Mount Union women’s tennis team lost an Ohio Athletic Conference match 6-3 to Ohio Northern (13-4, 3-0 OAC) Saturday afternoon.

The Purple Raiders (9-5, 2-2 OAC) secured their points in the doubles pairing of Gretchen Groves and Kayla Johnston with a score of 8-2, then Groves went on to win in singles 6-4, 6-3.

Lordstown graduate Trisha Kohut lost to Ohio Northern’s Katie Curry 6-2, 6-0 in singles competition.

Mount Union will stay on the road, continuing OAC action, as they travel to Marietta on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
