Mariners 11, Twins 4

MINNEAPOLIS

The Seattle Mariners heated up at the plate as Kyle Seager and Guillermo Heredia homered in a win over Minnesota. Ryon Healy drove in three runs as the Mariners helped Mike Leake (2-0) win again. Seattle didn’t manage a hit against Twins starter Jose Berrios (1-1) through three innings. Robinson Cano hit an RBI single in the fourth and Seager connected for a 3-0 lead. The Mariners added two more runs in the fifth off Berrios when Dee Gordon rolled a two-run single through a drawn-in infield to make it 5-0. Berrios was pulled from the game after 42/3 innings.

Tigers 6, White Sox 1

CHICAGO

Miguel Cabrera drove in three runs, Michael Fulmer pitched shutout ball into the sixth inning and the Detroit Tigers beat the Chicago White Sox. Cabrera had a two-run single in the third and RBI groundout in the fifth. Dixon Machado had two hits and chased Lucas Giolito (0-1) with a two-run double in the sixth that made it 5-0. Fulmer (1-1) pitched well enough, scattering six hits and walking three in 51/3 scoreless innings. Giolito struggled through 52/3 innings, allowing five runs and four hits for the White Sox.

Yankees 8, Orioles 3

NEW YORK

Sonny Gray pitched six effective innings, rookie Miguel Andujar hit a tiebreaking sacrifice fly and the New York Yankees downed the Baltimore Orioles to snap a two-game skid. New York broke a 3-all tie in the sixth on Andujar’s sacrifice fly, scoring Didi Gregorius. Austin Romine hit a soft pop to shallow right later in the inning that bounced out of first baseman Chris Davis’ glove, allowing Tyler Austin to score and chasing starter Chris Tillman (0-2). Gray (1-0) allowed three runs on four hits, walking two and striking out four.

Red Sox 10, Rays 3

BOSTON

Xander Bogaerts hit the first grand slam by a Boston player since the end of the 2016 season and drove in a career-best six runs to carry the Red Sox to a win over the Tampa Bay Rays for their seventh straight victory. J.D. Martinez hit his first home run of the season. Rafael Devers also connected. Rick Porcello (2-0) gave up three runs and six hits, striking out seven without allowing a walk over 71/3 innings. He retired 20 of 21 batters after giving up two runs in the first.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Cubs 5, Brewers 2

MILWAUKEE

Ian Happ hit a tiebreaking two-run single during Chicago’s four-run ninth, helping the Cubs beat the Milwaukee Brewers. With one out and the bases loaded, he dumped a 0-1 pitch from Jacob Barnes into left-center to give the Cubs a 4-2 lead. After Kris Bryant was intentionally walked, manager Joe Maddon sent starting pitcher Jon Lester to the plate to hit for reliever Pedro Strop (2-0). Lester got down a sacrifice that drove in Ben Zobrist from third for the final run. Barnes (0-1) was charged with four runs, two earned.

Cardinals 5, Diamondbacks 3

ST. LOUIS

Jose Martinez homered and drove in four runs as St. Louis ended the Arizona Diamondbacks’ four-game winning streak with a victory. Michael Wacha (1-1) outpitched Zack Greinke (1-1) despite matching a career high with five walks. Both starters went five innings. Bud Norris struck out the side to earn his first save of the season. Martinez’s three-run homer capped a four-run third as the Cardinals took a 5-2 lead. Marcell A.J. Pollock’s single in the first gave Arizona an early lead. He doubled and scored on Chris Owings’ single in the third for a 2-1 lead.

Mets 3, Nationals 2

WASHINGTON

Asdrubal Cabrera hit an RBI double and scored the go-ahead run in the seventh inning, helping the New York Mets come back to beat the Washington Nationals for their fourth straight win despite Bryce Harper’s fifth homer. The score was 1-all when Harper led off the bottom off the sixth against reliever Hansel Robles (1-0) by taking a fastball the opposite way. Nationals righty Brandon Kintzler (0-1) gave up consecutive hits to Amed Rosario and Cabrera to make it 2-2. Jeurys Familia recorded his fourth save. Mets starter Steven Matz went five innings and allowed one unearned run, three hits and struck out eight. Nationals starter Gio Gonzalez threw 51/3 innings, with one earned run, six hits and six strikeouts.

Phillies 20, Marlins 1

PHILADELPHIA

Maikel Franco and Aaron Altherr each hit a grand slam, Carlos Santana and Jorge Alfaro also went deep and the Philadelphia Phillies routed the Miami Marlins. Vince Velasquez (1-1) allowed one run and four hits, striking out six in six innings. Santana’s shot to deep right field was his 1,000th career hit. Marlins left-hander Dillon Peters (1-1) gave up nine runs and nine hits in 22/3 innings. Santana’s blast highlighted an eight-run fourth inning off Jacob Turner.

INTERLEAGUE

Astros 1, Padres 0, 10 innings

HOUSTON

Four-time Gold Glove first baseman Eric Hosmer overran a towering popup with two outs in the 10th inning, allowing the ball to fall without being touched and giving the Houston Astros a bizarre win over the San Diego Padres. A single by Brian McCann and a steal by pinch runner Derek Fisher set up the unusual ending. Chris Devenski (1-0) pitched 11/3 innings for the win. Robbie Erlin (0-1) took the loss. Gerrit Cole struck out 11 in seven sharp innings for Houston, giving up five hits and walking none.
