Austintown Elementary School hosted a father/child event on March 23 for all grades in the school.
The school’s PTA organized the event for the children and fathers. They accommodated 500 people mostly in the gymnasium and cafeteria. They provided the fathers and children with a number of activities to do throughout the night.
Bethany Martinez, president of the PTA, said that not many of the fathers get the opportunity to spend time with their children in the school. Most of the PTA is made up of the mothers of the students and they organize and attend many events for their children during school. They wanted to provide the fathers and children time to bond at the school the way the mothers often do.
The main draw of the night took place in the gym. The PTA took time in decorating the room for a father/child dance. The music and sounds of Bob Hlinka from Music Man Dj Services could be heard in the hallway before walking into the gym through the decorated doorway.
In the gym, the students and parents danced. Many of the children chose to dance with their friends and the dads stood back. Some of the students enjoyed playing with the balloons in the room. The PTA also set up a photo booth where the parents and children could take pictures with big hats and other silly stylings.
The PTA treated the fathers and children to a nice meal in the cafeteria. They had pizza, chicken, fruit, chips and more for the parents and children.
While eating the meal at the lunch tables, the families watched a performance from magician Eric Thompson. He took volunteers to the stage and did entertaining tricks for the attendees.
Each of the families had a chance to participate in a raffle and take a photo, which took place in the music room. The photo would be delivered to the students later as a 5x7 picture. The raffle awards included gift cards and baskets.
The PTA also decorated each of the hallways where the event took place. They had a “red carpet” of red tissue paper that ran from both entrances to the school into the gymnasium and the cafeteria.
