Tigers 9, White Sox 7, 10 innings

CHICAGO

Niko Goodrum hit a two-run homer after replacing the injured Miguel Cabrera, and the Detroit Tigers rallied to beat the White Sox in 10 innings in Chicago’s chilly home opener. Goodrum’s shot with two outs in the ninth got the comeback going. Nicholas Castellanos singled and Victor Martinez tied it with an RBI double. Mikie Mahtook singled leading off the 10th against Gregory Infante (0-1) and later scored from third on a roller toward second by Leonys Martin.

Twins 4, Mariners 2

MINNEAPOLIS

Mitch Garver hit the go-ahead home run in the seventh for Minnesota, one inning after Miguel Sano tied the game with a two-run shot as the Twins powered their way past the Seattle Mariners for a victory in their chilly home opener. Eddie Rosario went deep in the eighth to pad the lead, and Fernando Rodney worked the ninth for his first save with the Twins. Zach Duke (1-0) picked up the victory. James Paxton started strong for the Mariners with five scoreless innings.

Red Sox 3, Rays 2, 12 innings

BOSTON

Hanley Ramirez blooped a bases-loaded fly ball over the drawn-in outfield in right to break a 12th-inning tie and the Boston Red Sox, who rallied from a two-run deficit in the ninth, beat the Tampa Bay Rays to win their home opener. Bobby Poyner (1-0) pitched two innings, striking out three for his first major league win. Andrew Kittredge (0-2) took the loss, throwing a pair of scoreless innings before running into trouble in the 12th. David Price pitched seven shutout innings for the second straight outing.

Orioles 5, Yankees 2

NEW YORK

Adam Jones hit a go-ahead home run, Andrew Cashner pitched six strong innings and the Baltimore Orioles snapped a five-game losing streak, beating the New York Yankees. Jones’ third homer of the season was a two-run drive off Masahiro Tanaka in a five-run seventh inning. It came shortly after Aaron Judge had given New York a 1-0 lead in the sixth with his second home run of the year. Cashner (1-1) allowed two hits and struck out five. Brad Brach pitched the ninth for his first save of the season. Tanaka (1-1) cruised during his first six innings before the Orioles chased him in the seventh.

Rangers 6, Athletics 3

OAKLAND, CALIF.

Martin Perez pitched into the sixth inning of his first start of the season and the Texas Rangers held on to beat the Oakland Athletics before another sparse crowd. Adrian Beltre singled and doubled to become the all-time hits leader among Latin-born players. Shin-Soo Choo homered for the second consecutive day and Nomar Mazara added two hits to help the Rangers split the four-game series. Perez (1-0) was activated off the disabled list before the game and allowed three runs and 10 hits over 5 1-3 innings. Keone Kela pitched the ninth for his second save. Beltre doubled off Oakland starter Daniel Mengden (0-2) and scored in the second then singled in the eighth.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Mets 8, Nationals 2

WASHINGTON

Michael Conforto came off the disabled list to hit a tiebreaking, two-run homer off Stephen Strasburg, Yoenis Cespedes also went deep against the ace, and Jay Bruce tacked on an insurance grand slam, leading the New York Mets to a victory over Washington in the Nationals’ home opener. Jacob deGrom (2-0) wiggled out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam to finish his six-inning outing with a flourish. With two outs in the fifth, Conforto drove a 97 mph pitch out to left for a homer. Strasburg (1-1) gave up four runs in six innings.

Rockies 3, Padres 1

SAN DIEGO

Ryan McMahon drew a bases-loaded walk off All-Star closer Brad Hand to break a scoreless tie in the ninth inning and DJ LeMahieu added a two-run single for the Colorado Rockies, who beat the San Diego Padres. Hand (0-2) walked Trevor Story and Chris Iannetta to open the ninth and the Rockies loaded the bases when second baseman Carlos Asuaje committed an error when he couldn’t hold onto the throw from third baseman Christian Villanueva after Gerardo Parra’s bunt. Hand walked McMahon on four pitches to bring in Story. The Rockies had only four hits. Adam Ottavino (1-0) pitched two innings for the win and Wade Davis worked the ninth for his fourth save.

Phillies 5, Marlins 0

PHILADELPHIA

Phillies manager Gabe Kapler got booed in the home opener when he pulled Nick Pivetta in the sixth inning with a shutout intact, but the move worked out this time as the Philadelphia bullpen held on for a win over the Miami Marlins. Maikel Franco homered, tripled, singled and drove in four runs to boost the Phillies. Kapler removed Pivetta (1-0) with two outs in the sixth after 97 pitches, with the Phillies leading 3-0. Pivetta fanned nine in 5 2/3 innings, allowing four hits and no walks.

Diamondbacks 3, Cardinals 1

ST. LOUIS

Robbie Ray worked around five walks over six innings and the bullpen closed out a two-hitter, helping the Arizona Diamondbacks spoil the St. Louis Cardinals’ home opener. Ray (2-0) gave up a run and two hits while striking out nine. David Peralta capped off a two-run second inning with an RBI single. He pushed the lead to 3-0 with a double in the fourth. Yadier Molina had a run-scoring double in the fourth for the Cardinals. Brad Boxberger picked up his third save in three chances.
