Luncheon underway to commemorate MLK's legacy

YOUNGSTOWN — Rev. Gena Thornton introduced a luncheon to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the death of Martin Luther King Jr. by drawing a parallel between King and the high school students who organized the March for Our Lives in Washington a week and a half ago.

“Fifty years almost to the day, I saw young people — children as young as 11 — move to the front of the line as leaders,” Thornton said. “They are the fruit of Martin Luther King.”

About 100 people have gathered at First Presbyterian Church on Wick Avenue for the luncheon with the theme, “MLK 50 years later: Where do we go from here?”

Rev. Todd Johnson of Second Baptist Church in Warren will deliver the keynote address.
