Heavy rains cause flooding, close area roads

Steady rain Tuesday combined with some lightning, thunder and wind gusts brought a lot of umbrellas out and closed several roads according to checks with a number of police departments in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties.
According to 21 WFMJ-TV, The Vindicator’s broadcast, several roadways across the Mahoning Valley were closed because of flooding and high waters Tuesday night.
The Ohio Department of Transportation said state Route 711 southbound and Interstate 680 northbound in Youngstown was closed at press time.
In Salem Township in Columbiana County, police said several road were closed because of flooding – Lisbon-Canfield Road between state Routes 558 and 344; Jacob-Logtown Road between Route 45 and Lisbon Road; and old state Route 558 at the railroad underpass between Jersey Ridge Road and Route 558.
Western Reserve Road at the Ohio Turnpike overpass was water-covered but passable with caution, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol Canfield Post.
Warren reported at least three streets – Burton and Pine Southeast and Roanoke Avenue Southeast – were water-covered but passable.
Police said several other roads had standing water at 11:15 p.m., and motorists are reminded to use caution when driving and to slow down in their travels.
The Girard police dispatcher said no serious flooding was reported in that city.
As the rain continued overnight, water could rise and more roads may be affected early today.
