YOUNGSTOWN

The Soap Gallery, Opera Western Reserve and Lit Youngstown are combining their resources for “Highland Fling,” an evening of art, music and literature.

The Scottish-flavored event will take place Oct. 13 at 6 p.m. at Soap Gallery, 117 S. Champion St., downtown.

It will feature live artistic creation, musical performances by Young Artists of Opera Western Reserve, poetry readings and a bagpiper.

Tickets are $35 in advance or $40 at the door. Purchase tickets online at operawesternreserve.org or soapgalleryyo.com, or by phone at 330-480-0693.

Hors d’oeuvres with a Scottish flavor will be provided. A Scotch whisky tasting will cap the evening; beer and wine also will be available at the cash bar.

Soloists will perform arias from “Lucia di Lammermoor,” members of Lit Youngstown will read classic and modern Scottish poetry and artists will create paintings that will be auctioned off at the completion of the event.

Soap Gallery’s monthly show for October, “Shutter,” featuring work by local photographers, will be on display and for sale.

“Highland Fling” is designed as a lead-in to Opera Western Reserve’s Nov. 10 production of Donizetti’s opera, “Lucia di Lammermoor,” based on the novel by Sir Walter Scott, at Stambaugh Auditorium.

Tickets ($25 to $75) for the opera are on sale at operawesternreserve.org and the Stambaugh box office.
