FRIDAY’S COLLEGE FOOTBALL NEWS & NOTES

No. 14 Miami 31, Duke 6

DURHAM, N.C.

Malik Rosier threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score and No. 14 Miami’s defense shut down Duke. Rosier threw for 270 yards, including a 49-yard catch-and-run score by Ahmmon Richards early in the fourth quarter. Richards’ score broke it open, giving the Hurricanes (3-0, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) a 24-6 lead with 11:02 left. Mark Walton — averaging a conference-best 176 yards rushing through two games — managed only 51 yards on 17 carries against the nation’s No. 2-ranked run defense. But he added 79 yards receiving before leaving in the fourth quarter with an injury. Linebacker Michael Pinckney had 10 tackles, a fourth-down sack on Duke’s opening drive and a second-quarter interception to lead the effort that kept the Blue Devils (4-1, 1-1) out of the end zone.

Nebraska 28, Illinois 6

CHAMPAIGN, ILL.

Quarterback Tanner Lee threw for 246 yards and three touchdowns, helping lead Nebraska to a win over Illinois. The Cornhuskers (3-2, 2-0 Big Ten) led wire to wire, scoring on their first possession, a quick 88-yard drive capped by a 45-yard touchdown pass from Lee to De’Mornay Pierson-El, and was never under pressure. Pierson-El finished the night with four receptions for 94 yards and one score. Stanley Morgan Jr. also had a big night with a career-high eight receptions for 96 yards and a score.

Dartmouth 16, Penn 13

PHILADELPHIA

Jared Gerbino scored on a fourth-and-inches play as time ran out and Dartmouth shocked defending co-champion Penn in the Ivy League opener. Jack Heneghan and Gerbino, led the Big Green on a 15-play, 80-yard drive, opting to use Gerbino, the 230-pound backup quarterback, on the final play rather than attempt a tying field goal.

Heneghan converted a fourth-and-3 with a 5-yard pass to Emory Thompson near midfield and on the following third-and-4 Gerbino busted up the middle for a career-best 27 yards. Thompson followed with a sweep for 13 yards to the Penn 2. Penn had taken the lead on a 27-yard field goal by Jack Soslow with 5:37 to play. Heneghan was 23 of 31 for 199 yards and a 12-yard touchdown to Hunter Hagdorn in the second quarter. Gerbino picked up 71 yards on 11 carries and threw one incompletion. Dartmouth (3-0) was 1-6 in the Ivy League last year.
