Mill Creek ABWA chapter to meet Oct. 10
The Mill Creek Chapter of ABWA (American Business Women’s Association) will host its Oct. 10 meeting at A La Cart Catering in Canfield. Networking will begin at 6 p.m. with dinner at 6:30 p.m. The speaker for the evening will be Cindy Best from Howard Hanna Realtors. She will speak about how she got started in the business and the current trends in the real estate world. The menu will include Southern baked chicken, Swiss steak, mashed potatoes, peas and carrots, salad, Jello, applesauce and apple cake for dessert. The cost is $18. Shoe donation aims to help hurricane victims
Doctors Lawrence Karlock, Catherine Karlock, John Flauto, Joseph Arters and Darleen Abadco, and the staff at Austintown Podiatry Associates are looking to help the victims of hurricanes Harvey and Irma. They are collecting shoes to donate to the victims who have lost their footwear. If you would like to participate, donate shoes at one of the three offices: 1300 South Canfield-Niles Road, Suite 1, in Austintown; 7010 South Ave., Suite 3, in Boardman or 3802 Elm Road in Warren.
MCCTC flower shop opens for business
The student-run flower shop at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center will opened for its fall open house beginning on Sept. 22 and will be open throughout the month of October. A variety of fall silk floral arrangements and wreaths will be available. Fall mums are also available for sale and can be dressed for a gift or planted outside. The shop will be decorated and open to the public Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. during this time. Choose from the selection of pre-made items or purchase materials elsewhere and the students can create a beautiful piece for you. Learn to improve your soil on Oct. 10
Learn how to improve your soil and keep it fertile with Mahoning County Extension and Mahoning County Farm Bureau on Oct. 10 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Mahoning County Extension Office, located at 490 S. Broad Street in Canfield. The event will cover management practices, as well as how to improve water quality and preserve the environment. Program speaker Eric Barrett, OSU Extension Educator, and Bill Snyder, Extension Volunteer, will show participants how to manage, improve and preserve their landscape. Join the Canfield library for a Thursday Night Movie on Oct. 5 at 6 p.m. where a group will be watching a newly released DVD. Feel free to bring your own small snacks and drinks. This event is for adults and teens. The movie will be either PG or PG 13.
Friendly Squares have have Halloween dance on Oct. 14
The Friendly Squares will host its monthly square dance on Oct. 14 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State Street in Niles. Neil Harner will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be calling line dances. The theme for the dance is Halloween. Costumes are encouraged but not required. Library hosts annual memorial contest
The ninth annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest is running from Oct. 1-31 this year. Danielle Scott was a beloved Teen Advisory Board member who lost her battle to cancer. The libraries are sponsoring the ninth annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest to honor Danielle and her love of writing. The format of the writing contest this year is a six-word memoir. A Six-Word Memoir Æ is the story of your life—some part of it or all of it—told in exactly six words. Entries may be submitted online at http://www.libraryvisit.org/danielle or on standard 8 inch by 11 inch paper to any public library in Mahoning County by Oct. 31. If you submit your entry online, select the writing type (poem) and be sure to include your phone number. Hard copies must be typed. Be sure to include your name, telephone number, grade and school on your entry. Entries are not returnable. One winner will be chosen and will be awarded a plaque and a monetary prize. Eligibility: All entrants must be in grades 7-12 and either live in or attend school in Mahoning County.

Join the Canfield library on Oct. 21 at 2:30 p.m. to make your very own edible zombie. Who can make the scariest cookie? Zombies will then be eaten. Cookies, frosting and decorations will be provided. This event is for tweens who are ages 9-12.
Build a robot at the library

Quarter auction presented to benefit local charities
The GFWC/Ohio Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League is hosting its second Quarter Auction on Oct. 21 at Saint Nicholas Social Hall, located at 764 Fifth Street in Struthers. The doors open at 5:30 p.m. and bidding starts at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 each and the proceeds will benefit local charities. Chips, popcorn, water and soda will be available for purchase. Chaney class of 1956 to meet

Area dancers travel for square dance

Take walk through historic cemetery
Eyes For Olivia will present the CRBF History Walk through Salem’s Hope Cemetery on Oct. 8. Join the group as they travel back in time to meet some of Salem’s past residents and hear their stories. Registration is $5 and begins at 6 p.m. in the Chapel at Hope Cemetery, located at 1015 N. Lincoln Ave in Salem. Parking is available off of Superior Ave inside Waterworth Memorial Park. A few items from the Salem Historical Society will be on display inside the chapel along with light refreshments and a grave stone rubbing demo. Survivor Run to take place on Sept. 30
The fourth annual Survivor Run at Buckeye Horse Park in Canfield, in honor of Sallie Sullivan will take place on Sept. 30. This year’s theme at Survivor Run is the “Derby.” This event is to bring awareness to early detection and to share the love and passion Sullivan has for competitive trail riding. Best Derby hat picture will take place at 10:30 a.m. and riders will set out on trail at about noon. Any additional proceeds from the event will be donated to the Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center (JACBCC) to support Joanie’s Promise Fund.
Craft show comes to the library

Decorate a Pumpkin
Join the Canfield library on Oct. 14 at 2:30 p.m. to create your own Jack-o-Lantern. The library will provide pumpkins, paint, jewels and other pretty/spooky stuff with which to decorate. Give a “high five” to the dogs
Read to your favorite therapy dogs and give them a high five to welcome them to the library. Bring your own book, or the librarians find one for you to read to your furry friend. This event will take place on the first Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m. Therapy dogs provided by Pawz for People, a Community Partner of Pet Partners, a local Pet Therapy group. This event is for children in grades Kindergarten and up.
Get up and move at the library
Gotta Move Story Time is for children who are ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a caregiver. Join the Canfield library for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play every Wednesday at 10 and 11:30 a.m.
Take your tot to Tales and Talk
Join the program Baby Brilliant for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader. The program takes place every Tuesday at the Canfield library at 10 a.m.
Bond with babies and books
This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize. This event is for babies and will take place at the Canfield library every Thursday in October at 10 a.m.

Go to any PLYMC library to color a picture and enter a drawing to win four tickets (a family pack) to the 5 p.m. on Oct. 29 performance of Disney Live’s “Mickey & Minnie’s Doorway to Magic.” The contest runs from Oct. 2-19. “Historic Theaters of Youngstown and Mahoning Valley” presents urban explorer and historian Sean T. Posey as he traces the evolution of modern cinema through the rich local history of the Mahoning Valley on Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. Books will be available for sale. No reservations are needed. Author and Youtube sensation to appear at the library
Celebrate Teen Read Week with YouTube star, Paige McKenzie. McKenzie is the face of “The Haunting of Sunshine Girl” Network, now boasting a viewership of 230 million and author of the best-selling young adult trilogy of the same name. Praised by R.L. Stine and Wes Craven, “The Haunting of Sunshine Girl” book series is soon to be a TV series with the Weinstein Company. McKenzie will be speaking about what it’s like to be a triple threat: YouTuber, author and actress, beginning when she was still in high school. This event is for teens and adults at the Canfield library on Oct. 10 at 6:30 p.m.
Step back in time with the Canfield Historical Society
Canfield History Walk: A Step Back in Time is a fundraising event for the non-profit Canfield Historical Society. The History Walk will guide visitors through Canfield’s past, from early pioneer days to the present era. Many Canfield residents will portray historical figures and events such as Marion Fowler, Rev. Joseph Badger, Harry S. Manchester, a Civil War Veteran, Minor Family (one of Canfield’s first settlers) and others. Re-enactments of an action packed bank robbery and the fatal shooting of Canfield Sheriff Cone is being planned. The guided walk around Canfield’s central green will teach young and old about local history, and foster a love of community. The event will take place on Sept. 30. There will be three tours each day beginning at 4:30 p.m. with the last tour departing at 5:45 p.m, rain or shine. The event will conclude with dinner at Piccadilly Parlour Victorian Tea Room. Ticket price, including dinner, is $40 per couple or $25 individual. Tickets may be purchased by calling the Canfield Historical Society at 330-533-3458.

Local church is location for shoe drive
Canfield Presbyterian Church is sponsoring a Soles4Souls drive to collect new and gently used shoes through Oct. 1. Soles4Souls is a non-profit organization that provides footwear to those in need in times of disaster, distributes shoes to children and adults in developing countries, and helps entrepreneurs start small businesses repairing and selling used shoes as a way to support their families. A collection bin is located in the lobby of the main entrance of the church - new or gently used shoes and boots are accepted, but no flip-flops or slippers will be accepted. The church address is 140 W. Main St. in Canfield and is open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. (Wednesdays until 8 p.m.) and Sundays from 9-11:30 a.m.
Back pain and Sciatica workshop to be Sept. 30
The Center for Physical Health will be hosting a workshop on Sept. 30 at 9 a.m., focusing on managing back pain and sciatica. The class will be led by Marybeth Romeo, Licensed Physical Therapist and owner of the Center for Physical Health, which is located at 4137 Boardman-Canfield Road, Suite 104, in Canfield. The Managing Back Pain and Sciatica Workshop will focus on helping those in the Valley who suffer from pain in the back and legs when they do everyday activities. Back Pain and sciatica can be a result of a traumatic injury, poor form when exercising, or even just sleeping or moving in the wrong way. Many people refuse to deal with back pain in favor of denial, however, this workshop seeks to help naturally relieve the symptoms of back pain and sciatica, as well as offer an opportunity to help treat the cause of the problem overall. The cost of the Back Pain and Sciatica Workshop is free for the community, and registration can be done over the phone at 330-286-3850 or by email at office@centerforphysicalhealth.org. Registration should be made before Sept. 28; however, people will be admitted at the door pending available space. Attendees will walk away from this workshop with a working knowledge of how to naturally relieve back pain for good, as well as an understanding of the benefits of physical therapy.

GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.
