Mom pleads guilty to duct-taping child to chair

A Boardman woman pleaded guilty Wednesday to one count of felony child endangering for duct-taping her 12-year-old child to a chair.

Susan Malysa, 32, of Roche Way, could face up to three years in prison and $10,000 in fines.

A Mahoning County grand jury indicted Malysa on three counts of endangering children earlier this year. Prosecutors dropped two counts in exchange for the plea.

Prosecutors will recommend a sentence of 60 days in jail and mental-health treatment as a condition of probation.

Malysa has no prior criminal record.

In June, Boardman police responded to a call and found Malysa’s 12-year-old son duct-taped to a chair. She was at the YMCA with another child.

Malysa had duct-taped the child’s legs to a chair, his arms together and his mouth shut, the report said.

Two other family members reached the child before he was injured, prosecutors said. Mahoning County Children Services placed the child with other family members.

Judge R. Scott Krichbaum of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court will sentence Malysa at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 21.
